With the enormous pressure the movie biz puts on actresses to stay young-looking, it's no wonder that female celebs battle the aging process by any means necessary. For many, that means Botox, face lifts and other plastic surgeries -- but not for English actresses Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Thompson! The Oscar winning pals have taken a stand for natural beauty by forming what they jokingly refer to as the "British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League."
"(Cosmetic surgery) goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty." Winslet, 35, tells the U.K.'s Telegraph newspaper. "I will never give in," she vows.
Despite the fact that audiences have always loved her natural curves, Winslet has often faced pressure to lose weight and conform to the stick-figure aesthetic seen on fashion runways. But she refuses. As Winslet explains, "I am an actress, I don't want to freeze the expression of my face."
Winslet's former Sense and Sensibility costar, Emma Thompson. agrees. "I'm not fiddling about with myself," the 52-year-old actress insists. "We're in this awful youth-driven thing now where everybody needs to look 30 at 60." Thompson has been quite open about how she is not afraid of aging, which is perhaps why she is so annoyed at the term "cougar," with its negative and "predatory" connotations.
Rachel Weisz, 41, chimes in with, “People who look too perfect don’t look sexy or particularly beautiful."
Sure, the Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League is more of a state of mind that an actual organization -- but it would have a whole lot of card-carrying members if it were real. In an interview with Elle last year, Oscar winner Julia Roberts, 42, made no bones about her feelings on the issue. "It's unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don't even give themselves a chance to see what they'll look like as older persons," she said. "I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates. I want my kids to know when I'm pissed, when I'm happy and when I'm confounded. Your face tells a story... and it shouldn't be a story about your drive to the doctor's office.”
Salma Hayek agrees. In an interview in the September issue of Allure, the 44-year-old knockout admits that she understands the desire to stop the aging process -- but not through the use of plastic surgery. "It's like the uniform of a generation. And it's not necessarily beautiful," she says. "It's not wrinkled-looking, but it's not beautiful."
Echoing the thoughts of the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League across the pond, she says: "Within you there is beauty, and you have to learn how to find it and enhance it in a natural way. One thing that is exciting about being a woman is that you can rediscover your beauty over and over and over." Amen, sister.
