He said the Republican candidates seeking their party's nomination to face Obama next year are "clinging closely to the Tea Party line" -- referring to the conservative political movement -- and offering "back to the future bromides" that led to the U.S. economic downturn of recent years.

Obama, a Democrat, plans to remain focused on "the embattled middle class and the sense that in America if you work hard you can get ahead," Axelrod said.

Obama has been battling with congressional Republicans over their demand for deep federal spending cuts and his contention that the richest Americans should pay higher taxes.

Axelrod checked off various ways in which the United States could "mortgage its future" with deep spending cuts.

"If you cut education by 25 percent, as has been proposed, you are mortgaging the future. ... If you cut research funds by 70 percent, as has been proposed, you are mortgaging the future," he said.

Axelrod said the electoral landscape in 2012 could be shaped by so-called Super PACS (political action committees) -- fundraising organizations that can pour money into U.S. elections -- creating a "menacing kind of war game."

Super PACS were made possible by a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that lifted many spending and contribution limits for political donors, including corporations and labor unions.

"I've been concerned about money and politics for a long time. ... The risk is to return to a sort of Gilded Age where special interests can buy a congressman or even a president. It's not healthy," he said.

My husband and I don?t see eye to eye when it comes to home d?cor. I have always liked things to be coordinated, whereas he could care less about what something looks like. I realize that he?s a man and men usually don?t care, but it is frustrated by my desire to decorate. We bought a new home about nine months ago and we have a long way to go with decorating. However, I have several things that are just for decoration and not for use. For instance, the coffee pot (we don?t drink coffee at home anyway), my decorative potholders and towels, etc. Also, in my restrooms I have decorative towels, accessories and flower shaped soaps that are for decoration. I don?t want people wiping their hands on the decorative towels when they use the restroom. The trash can in the front bathroom has gold colored pine cones in it because I don?t want people putting garbage in it. Those items were kind of pricey so I don?t want them to be ruined. Is there anything wrong with that?
When people come to my home I do all that I can to make them feel welcome. But I am anal about putting soda cans, bottles or cups (especially those that sweat) on the coffee and end tables. It?s not that people don?t know how to act or what to do when they are visiting others, but what some people do at their home may not be appropriate to do at your home.

Some people sleep on their couch whereas we don?t. My husband would love to do that though. I am picky when it comes to our computer. If it?s an adult, then I have no problem letting them use it. But I don?t like kids to use it without parental guidance. What if they download a virus or what if they look something up they shouldn?t see?

I have decorative items, but I don?t think I am as extreme as this. If you place soaps in the bathroom, you can?t expect people not to use them, especially if they are placed right there on the sink.. same thing with towels. I have decorative towels in the kitchen that are seasonal.. and I saw my husband wipe his paws on them the other day.. and I just let him know those were for looks and to use the counter top towels.. he gave me a confused stare and said okay.. we can?t expect men to understand decorative items in the home.. Treatment of rectal cancer varies enormously between different European countries

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2011) ? First results from an international comparison of the care of patients with rectal cancer have shown there are substantial differences in the use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy between European countries.

The European Registration of Cancer Care (EURECCA) study, initiated by ECCO -- the European CanCer Organisation -- compared the treatment of 6,597 patients in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and The Netherlands who were diagnosed with rectal cancer between 2008 and 2009. It also compared the numbers of deaths 30 days after surgery.

In a presentation to the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress, Dr Colette van den Broek MD, a PhD student and research fellow at Leiden University Medical Centre (Leiden, The Netherlands), explained that by using the results from the EURECCA study, she and the other researchers involved in the project, hoped to identify those aspects of cancer care that played a role in improving clinical practice, treatments, survival, and the limiting of undesired side effects. Then, they would be able to develop recommendations for treatment that could lead to more standardised clinical practice across Europe.

The project started three years ago, and the data presented now, which have been obtained from comparisons of cancer registries in the four countries, show that the use of radiotherapy, or radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy, varied enormously between the countries, despite the fact that the patients had comparable stages of disease.

"The use of radiotherapy or chemotherapy or both was the lowest in Denmark at 25 percent, followed by Norway at 50 percent, Sweden at nearly 61 percent and the highest in The Netherlands at 81 percent," said Dr Van den Broek. "Its use varied depending on the stage of the disease in each country. For instance, in Denmark and The Netherlands, patients with stage I, II and III disease received radiotherapy, chemotherapy or both most often; in Sweden it was patients with stage II or III disease, and in Norway patients with stage IV disease, who received it most often."

At present, the researchers are comparing the deaths within 30 days after surgery between countries. "We will be able to compare treatment strategies, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or both, for different stages of disease," said Dr Van den Broek.

"It is clear from our results so far, that different countries in Europe have different guidelines for treating rectal cancer patients. An earlier study has shown that radiotherapy, delivered before surgery, reduces local recurrences of the disease. But, in The Netherlands, we use radiotherapy for almost all stages, while in Denmark, for example, they use a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The differences in treatment do not necessarily cause big differences in survival, and recent research has shown that, although radiotherapy decreases deaths from cancer, it increases deaths due to other causes. So we have to find the right balance between the 'gain and pain' of radiotherapy and between under- and over-treatment. With this study we hope to be able to give an answer to the ongoing discussion about this and it is a first step towards a single guideline that can be used in different countries."

The EURECCA project is looking at a number of cancers in addition to rectal cancer, and Dr Van den Broek says that the researchers are hoping to look at long-term survival as well. "This is just a first step in the process," she concluded.

ECCO president, Professor Michael Baumann, said: "Cancer professionals know well that treatment practice varies widely in Europe. These differences have many reasons, such as regional experience and expertise as well as available infrastructure. To some extent differences in approach may, therefore, be quite appropriate. On the other hand it appears unlikely that all different approaches could be equally effective and equally well tolerable. Comparison of outcome after different approaches in large cohorts is an evidence-based way to identify shortcomings in specific services. For this reason, ECCO and several of its member societies strongly support the EURECCA study, which provides a show-case on what can be achieved for improved cancer care by such multidisciplinary, multinational clinical research projects."

Professor David Kerr, president of ESMO and Professor of Cancer Medicine at the University of Oxford, said: "This important study gives an insight into one aspect of the reasons underpinning variation in recurrence and survival from rectal cancer -- access to optimal treatment around the time of diagnosis. Although heterogeneity in the biology of cancer is accepted and the subject of much research, unwarranted variation in clinical outcome may be related to lack of knowledge, lack of funding, inadequate healthcare systems or failure to apply effective treatment protocols. This report serves as a wake-up call to the European cancer community that further work needs to be done to find how widespread this phenomenon is."

When the economy slows, do does demand for oil.

"People are just afraid that demand is going to be affected in a negative way and that's pulling prices back down," said Tom Bentz, an analyst at BNP Paribas Commodity Futures.

After a broad decline the day before, stock markets on Friday wavered between small gains and losses, while many commodities ? including gold ? continued to drop.

A day after it plunged more than 6 percent, Benchmark U.S. oil fell 66 cents to finish at $79.85 per barrel. The price of oil still is almost $5 a barrel more than a year ago. Analysts expect it to stay between $75 and $90 per barrel until there is a better picture of what's ahead for the global economy.

U.S. benchmark oil hit $113.93 a barrel on April 29. But high unemployment in the U.S. ? the world's biggest oil consumer ? and signs of a slowing economy in China ? the second largest oil consumer ? pulled crude down.

Brent crude, which is used to price many kinds of oil produced overseas, fell $1.52 to end at $103.97 per barrel.

In other energy trading, heating oil fell 5.2 cents to finish at $2.8059 per gallon, gasoline futures dropped 1.93 cents to finish at $2.5244 per gallon and natural gas fell less than a cent to end the day at $3.701 per 1,000 cubic feet.

"Glee" debut loses TV fans but wins over critics (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Television musical comedy "Glee" returned to smaller audiences but warm reviews after a summer of confusion over the future of its stars, a box-office flop of a concert movie and disappointment at the Emmys.

The Fox show attracted just 8.9 million viewers, a 30 percent drop on last year's season two opener, according to figures on Wednesday from media research company Nielsen.

But those who watched the subversive comedy about a failing high school show choir mostly liked what they saw.

Entertainment Weekly said it was "a really satisfying start to the new year." Rolling Stone praised the plot, the witty repartee and song choice but thought the season opener "didn't hit any of the emotional notes 'Glee' is capable of."

As promised, the show made clear that lead characters Rachel (Lea Michele), Finn (Cory Monteith), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) would be "graduating" and leaving the program at the end of the season.

Artie (Kevin McHale) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) still have another year of high school to complete while the status of other key characters, including Brittany (Heather Morris) and the newly-punkified Quinn (Dianna Agron) was unclear.

"Glee" became a pop culture phenomenon in 2010 with its best-selling musical cover versions, quirky humor, treatment of teen sexuality, a character in a wheelchair and an actress with Down's Syndrome.

But last season, the show disappointed fans when it brought in too many guest stars and the plot meandered. "Glee The 3D Concert Movie" made a dismal $16 million at world box offices over the summer, and the show won just two Emmys last week, for best casting and for guest actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Creator Ryan Murphy has said that this year the show will get back to basics and renew its focus on core characters.

MEXICO CITY ? Police say officers responding to a report of an armed robbery killed three alleged bandits during a shootout at a restaurant in one of Mexico City's most affluent neighborhoods.

The capital city's police departments says several hooded men stormed into a restaurant in the Polanco district but a waitress called police.

In three minutes, 60 police officers arrived and shooting erupted. Three suspects were killed and another was detained in the Wednesday night attack.

Police said Thursday that no patrons or restaurant employees were wounded.

TOKYO (AP) ? A powerful typhoon headed north Thursday after dumping heavy rains on Japan's tsunami-devastated coastline, paralyzing commuter trains in the capital, and leaving at least 16 people dead or missing across the country.

There had been concerns that Typhoon Roke could pose more problems for the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, which was sent into meltdown by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, but officials said the plant weathered the storm without major incident.

Hiroki Kawamata, spokesman for plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co., said several cameras set up to monitor the plant were damaged, but there had been no further leaks of radioactive water or material into the environment.

"We are seeing no problems so far," he said.

The typhoon had reached the country's northern island of Hokkaido by Thursday morning after weakening overnight, but there were no immediate reports of damage there. The storm was still packing sustained winds of up to 78 mph (126 kph).

The typhoon made landfall Wednesday afternoon near the city of Hamamatsu, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Tokyo, and then cut a path to the northeast and through the capital before bringing new misery to the tsunami zone. It dumped up to 17 inches (42 centimeters) of rain in some areas, triggering landslides and flooding.

Police and local media reported 16 people dead or missing, most swept away by rivers swollen with rains in the southern and central regions. One person died in a landslide in northern Iwate prefecture and two people were swept away in Sendai in the northeast.

Hundreds of tsunami survivors in government shelters in the Miyagi state town of Onagawa were forced to evacuate for fear of flooding.

Strong winds snapped power lines in many areas, and officials said more than 200,000 households in central Japan were without electricity late Wednesday.

Overnight in Tokyo, where many rush hour trains were suspended for hours, thousands of commuters got stuck at stations across the sprawling city and stood in long lines for buses and cabs.

"The hotels in the vicinity are all booked up, so I'm waiting for the bullet train to restart," Hiromu Harada, a 60-year-old businessman, said at Tokyo Station.

Kyodo said 5,000 people stayed overnight inside Shinkansen bullet trains at Tokyo and Shizuoka stations.

Fire department officials reported three people injured in Tokyo. In the trendy shopping district of Shibuya, winds knocked a tree onto a sidewalk, but no one was hurt. Pedestrians struggled to walk straight in powerful winds that made umbrellas useless.

The storm had set off landslides in parts of Miyagi that already were hit by the March disasters. The local government requested the help of defense troops, and dozens of schools canceled classes.

A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck late Wednesday just south of Fukushima in Ibaraki state. Officials said the temblor posed no danger to the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, and that it did not cause any damage or injuries in the region.

Heavy rains prompted floods and caused road damage earlier in dozens of locations in Nagoya and several other cities, the Aichi prefectural government said. More than 200 domestic flights were canceled.

A typhoon that slammed Japan earlier this month left about 90 people dead or missing.
