Scientists investigated a two-legged plant-eating dinosaur about the size of a German shepherd that lived some 72 million years ago, the pachycephalosaur Stegoceras validum. This herbivore possessed a bony dome on its skull, and there has been heated debate as to whether they used their heads to ram an opponent headlong, as bighorn sheep do, or to attack the opponent's flanks, as is the case with bison.

"Pachycephalosaur domes are weird structures not exactly like anything in modern animals," said researcher Eric Snively, a zoologist at Ohio University. "We wanted to test the controversial idea that the domes were good for head-butting."

Head-butting is typically a form of male-to-male competition for access to females, explained researcher Jessica Theodor at the University of Calgary in Canada. So the results would provide a look at the beasts' social lives.

The scientists found that the bony anatomy of the Stegoceras dome was better at protecting the brain than the skull of any modern head-butter.

"It's pretty clear that although the bones are arranged differently in the Stegoceras, it could easily withstand the kinds of forces that have been measured for the living animals that engage in head-butting," Theodor said.

Most head-butting animals have domes like sturdy motorcycle helmets. "They have a stiff rind on the outside with a sort of a spongy, energy-absorbing material just beneath it and then a stiff, really dense coat over the brain," Snively said. Stegoceras had an extra layer of dense bone in the middle.

In comparison, llamas would crack their skulls by head-butting, and giraffes also would fare poorly. "They swing their necks at each other and try to hit each other in the neck or the side," Snively said. If giraffes do manage to butt heads, they can knock each other out because "their anatomy isn't built to absorb the collision as well as something like musk ox or bighorn sheep."

This research could lead to improved helmet designs.

"Pachycephalosaurs had cool structures in their domes that channeled blood to a cushioning soft-tissue expansion of the dome, and the same structures may have had a dual role in structural reinforcement," Snively said. "Our particular pachycephalosaur's dome was like a double motorcycle helmet of alternating stiff and compliant layers."

Now he and his colleague John Cotton are looking into biology-inspired helmet designs, he said.

The scientists detailed their findings June 28 in the journal PLoS ONE.

"We can safely assume that the objects they stole where original, from that time," Mensfelt said.

Prosecutor Mariusz Slomka told Polish media that the couple confessed to stealing the objects and settled for a suspended prison term and a fine, which Slomka did not specify. The couple are free to return to Israel, Slomka said.

Then in early June, the hacker group broke into the Sony Pictures web site and claimed to have lifted the personal data of a million individuals. Sony Pictures affirmed the hack on June 8, when it admitted it had notified "approximately 37,500 people who may have had some personally identifiable information stolen during the recent attack."

Sony Pictures said the stolen information didn't include "any credit-card information, Social Security numbers, or driver-license numbers." Still, it admitted the hackers obtained data on a significant number of its web-site users, such as "address, e-mail address, telephone number, gender, date of birth, and web-site password and username."

However, LulzSec said its haul from Sony Pictures had a wider scope than the company reported. The group claimed to have compromised sensitive corporate details as well as propriety information. "Among other things, we also compromised all admin details of Sony Pictures -- including passwords -- along with 75,000 'music codes' and 3.5 million 'music coupons,'" the hacker group wrote.

Moreover, the group hacked Sony Pictures using "a very simple SQL injection -- one of the most primitive and common vulnerabilities, as we should all know by now," LulzSec observed. "From a single injection, we accessed EVERYTHING. What's worse is that every bit of data we took wasn't encrypted."

NATO says hit military targets in Libya's Brega (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? NATO missiles have hit a site in Libya used by Muammar Gaddafi's forces to stockpile military supplies and vehicles, the alliance said on Saturday, adding it was unaware of 15 civilian deaths reported by state media.

The attack late on Friday was the second within hours on what NATO said were clearly identified military targets in the coastal city of Brega, around 200 km (130 miles) west of the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

Libyan state television said a local bakery and a restaurant had been hit, wounding 20 people in addition to the 15 dead. State news agency Jana said a strike in the same area earlier on Friday had killed five civilians.

"We have no indications of any civilian casualties in connection to these strikes," a NATO official said.

"What we know is that the buildings we hit were occupied and used by pro-Gaddafi forces to direct attacks against civilians around Ajdabiya," the official said of a nearby rebel-held town.

"Unlike the pro-Gaddafi forces, we go to great lengths to reduce the possibility of any civilian casualties."

Separately, a Reuters correspondent in the capital Tripoli heard a total of four loud explosions as jets flew overhead on two occasions on Saturday. The blasts appeared to come from the eastern suburb of Tajura. Several other explosions shook the city late on Friday.

NATO acknowledged for the first time last week that one of its raids in a three-month campaign could have caused civilian casualties, prompting concerns within the alliance.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said NATO's credibility was at stake and called for a suspension in the campaign -- an appeal that was swiftly knocked down at NATO headquarters and by allies, including France and Britain.

In a televised address this week, Gaddafi branded NATO "murderers" and vowed to fight to the death to stay in power.

The bombing campaign of the NATO-led coalition is into its fourth month in support of Libyan rebels seeking to end Gaddafi's 41-year-old rule.

Recent progress has been slow and rebels have taken many casualties, but there are signs Gaddafi's forces are also being stretched and the local economy hit by international sanctions.

In what would be a morale-booster for rebels if they hear about it, four members of Libya's national football team and 13 other football figures defected to rebels, the BBC reported.

It said national goalkeeper Juma Gtat and Adel bin Issa, the coach of Tripoli's top club al-Ahly, announced the defections in the rebel-held Nafusa Mountains in western Libya.

Get your helmets and lace those hiking?shoes, Madison County Parks and Recreation have heard your needs and are set to deliver.

Coming in 2012, parks and recreation will open new hiking and mountain biking trails in Madison County to satisfy your inner outdoorsman.

?We are always getting calls on new ideas and suggestions,? said Lynn Bowles, Madison County Parks and Recreation Director. ?But most recently, the main question is where to ride mountain bikes.?

Parks and recreation saw the need and saw the potential, and on Monday, June 13 approached Madison County Commissioners during their regularly scheduled meeting.

The result, a unanimous decision to allow the use of over 100 county-owned acres of land near Long Branch Road and the fairgrounds to be transformed into an outdoorsmen?s playground.

And while the plans are still in their infancy, initial?designs call for a seven mile cross country course, a downhill course for more advanced riders, a pump track for beginners, hiking trails and a disk golf course.

?It will look similar to?ski slopes with harder trails on top and easier ones

on the bottom with signage to show which trails are appropriate (to skill level),? said Bowles.

Madison County resident, Ron Stimach, has been an avid downhill mountain biker for nearly?two decades.

?There are a lot of people that come out here for outdoor activities, but there are no places for mountain biking, everybody has to leave the county and go to Buncombe,? said Stimach, who often drives over 45 minutes to get to the closest downhill trail.

With the new trails, he will be less than one mile from downhill courses.

?It will be great, especially because it will be so close,? said Stimach.

And while local bikers expressed their excitement for being in such close proximity, the new trails may also bring new faces into the county.

?I would think people will come from all over to ride,? said Stimach. ?It could also bring money into the county.?

The new trails will also give teens and children around the county a convenient place to exercise and enjoy outdoor hobbies.

?So many kids around here have BMX bikes, but just don?t have a place to ride them,? said Stimach. ?It will give kids something great to do around here.?

Bowles said that the project should be no cost to the county as teams of volunteers will clear the initial land and maintain the trails once constructed.

?It?s the nature of this type of project,? said Bowles. ?People know that if they don?t take the time to take care of the trail, it will not be there to use.?

Bowles said that she anticipates bikers and hikers alike will be able to utilize the new trails, free of charge, by?spring of 2012, depending on the amount of volunteers able to help make this possible.

Boehner says Obama lacks House support for Libya (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Setting up a showdown on Libya, House Republicans agreed on Wednesday to vote on dueling measures, one to give President Barack Obama limited authority to continue U.S. involvement in the NATO-led operation against Moammar Gadhafi and the other to cut off funds for military hostilities.

Officials said the measures ? a resolution and a bill ? most likely would come to a vote Friday, a timetable that reflects widespread dissatisfaction with Obama's decision not to seek congressional consent for the 3-month-old war.

"The fact is the president has not made his case to the members of Congress," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters. "He's not made his case to the American people. We've been in this conflict for 90 days and the president hasn't talked to the American people for four or five weeks about why we're there, what our national interest is and why we should continue."

Emerging from a closed-door meeting on the resolution and the competing legislation, rank-and-file Republicans indicated a growing consensus for the bill, which would bar funds for Libya except for money spent this year on search and rescue, aerial refueling, operational planning, intelligence and surveillance and non-combat missions.

This was a direct response to Obama's claim that the action does not amount to full-blown hostilities and did not need congressional approval.

"It would not have funding for hostilities. Drones couldn't be used for bombing," said Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

The Libyan war has exposed deep divisions in Congress and within the GOP ranks. Obama's secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton, said lawmakers were free to raise questions but that "the bottom line is, whose side are you on?"

Clinton, who spoke to reporters Wednesday during a brief visit to Jamaica, added: "Are you on Gadhafi's side, or are you on the side on the aspirations of the Libyan people and the international coalition that has been bringing them support? For the Obama administration the answer to that question is clear."

Leading Republicans and Democrats in the Senate are pushing a resolution to give Obama limited authority in the conflict, with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., calling it a "clear statement to our allies, to the world, to the Libyan people and to Gadhafi that we support the administration's actions on Libya."

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, sponsored the resolution that would put a one-year limit on the mission and prohibit U.S. ground forces in Libya.

The House resolution to continue the mission mirrors the Senate measure.

The competing efforts put senators at odds with members of the House, including anti-war Democrats and tea party-backed Republicans, who question the legitimacy of the operation since Obama never sought congressional consent under the 1973 War Powers Resolution.

"We have a responsibility to follow the rule of law and as the chief law enforcement officer of the land so does he," Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said of the president.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said a House vote to end the operation would "give hope to this dictator Moammar Gadhafi, undermine the effort of the innocent people in Libya and strike a blow at our NATO alliance."

Obama did not seek congressional authorization when he launched air strikes against Gadhafi's forces on March 19. Lawmakers argue that Obama is in violation of the War Powers Resolution, which requires approval of the legislative branch within 60 days, with a 30-day extension. That deadline has passed.

The White House, in a report to Congress last week, said the limited U.S. role in the operation did not amount to hostilities and did not require congressional authorization, an argument that further upset lawmakers.

"That's outrageous. What do you do, spend $9 million a day to play table tennis?" said Rep. Donald Manzullo, R-Ill.

In a Senate speech, Reid argued that the challenge to Obama was politically driven.

"Some Republicans in the House of Representatives and on the campaign trail have expressed concern over our involvement in this conflict," Reid said. "They have clearly decided to use the War Powers Resolution as a political bludgeon to pursue a partisan agenda."

The Democratic leader said the question for lawmakers was whether U.S. involvement in a mission "to stop mass murder and chaos" in Libya was the right decision.

"I'm confident it was," Reid said. "Moammar Gadhafi's repressive dictatorship is a threat to the region and to the United States' national security."

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will consider the Kerry-McCain resolution next week, but the full Senate may not act for weeks.

Tornado cancels racing at Churchill Downs track (Reuters)

LOUISVILLE, Ky (Reuters) ? Racing and training were canceled on Thursday at Churchill Downs, a day after a tornado hit the thoroughbred racetrack famed as home of the Kentucky Derby, according to a statement from the track.

National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Szappanos in Louisville confirmed that a tornado had touched down at the site Wednesday evening.

There were no reported injuries to workers or horses, according to the statement, posted on the track's web site.

Nine barns suffered "significant damage" as a result of the storm, along with a number of stable area structures, including some living accommodations for workers, according to the statement.

Churchill Downs officials are assessing damage to the stable area and have arranged for the possible relocation of about 150 horses to the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center near the racetrack.

Churchill Downs also is coordinating with the American Red Cross and emergency management officials to provide shelter for about 100 workers whose living spaces were damaged.

Churchill Downs is most famous for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby, the first leg in U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown of events, which also includes the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.

Known as the "most exciting two minutes in sports," the Kentucky Derby is run on the first Saturday of every May, with a field of 3-year-old thoroughbreds racing around a one-and-a-quarter-mile track.

Va. man charged in 2010 DC-area military shootings (AP)

LEESBURG, Va. ? A Marine Corps reservist arrested in a security scare near the Pentagon last week was charged Thursday in a series of pre-dawn shootings at military buildings in the Washington area last year.

Federal prosecutors said in court documents that they found bomb-making materials in a backpack carried by 22-year-old Yonathan Melaku and found a list of suspicious items inside his home. They also said authorities discovered a video he took of himself firing shots outside one building last fall and repeatedly saying the Arabic words "Allahu Akbar," which means "God is Great."

He was detained early Friday for trespassing inside Arlington National Cemetery. Investigators said he was carrying a backpack with a quantity of ammonium nitrate, which is widely used in explosives and is available commercially as fertilizer; a spiral notebook containing references to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden; spent 9 mm shell casings; and cans of spray paint.

The ammonium nitrate was contained in plastic bags marked "5 lbs" and "AN," though it was not clear from the court papers if he actually had five pounds of the substance. Authorities said the ammonium nitrate was inert.

Authorities also recovered a videotape from Melaku's bedroom that shows him firing shots out the passenger-side window of his car outside the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

"That's what they get. That's my target. That's the military building. It's going to be attacked," he said in the video, according to court papers.

Inside his home, authorities found a list of numbered items ? including alkaline battery, battery connector for 9 volt, LED light, and epoxy or super glue ? consistent with producing a bomb.

At a news conference Thursday, U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said it was possible Melaku could face further charges. MacBride said that the evidence against Melaku was "very concerning" and that the investigation into him was ongoing.

Melaku was "not on our radar prior to Friday's events," said James McJunkin, the assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington field office. It appears Melaku had intended to carry out some sort of vandalism in the cemetery, McJunkin said.

Melaku had been scheduled to appear in court Thursday on unrelated larceny charges, but that hearing was canceled. He was charged Thursday with two counts each of damaging federal property with a gun and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He was not expected to make an initial court appearance Thursday on the new charges, said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.

Investigators say forensic evidence links Melaku to five shootings last October and November, including at a U.S. Coast Guard recruiting office, a Marine Corps recruiting sub-station and near the Pentagon. He was charged in two of the shootings, outside the Pentagon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The FBI said at the time that the shooter was likely someone with a gripe against the military. The Marine Corps said this week that it was in the process of trying to remove Melaku from the service because of his arrest several weeks ago on the unrelated larceny charges.

An official has said Melaku has no known ties to al-Qaida or any other terrorist organization.

Doctors upgrade condition of beaten Giants fan (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Doctors said Wednesday they have upgraded the condition of a San Francisco Giants fan who has recently shown increasing brain activity after a severe beating left him in a coma three months ago outside Dodger Stadium.

Bryan Stow is now breathing without a ventilator, has moved his left arm and been able to intermittently follow some basic commands as physicians wean him off heavy sedatives used to ward off seizures, said Dr. Geoff Manley, chief of neurosurgery at San Francisco General Hospital.

Manley cautioned, however, that he could not predict whether Stow would recover further, and that dangers such as infection and a buildup of fluids around the brain remained.

"He is far from out of the woods," Manley said of the 42-year-old Santa Cruz paramedic.

Stow had been in critical condition since the March 31 attack after the season opener between the rival Giants and Dodgers. His condition has been upgraded to serious.

He was still without the left half of his skull, which doctors removed to reduce pressure from brain swelling, the same technique used to treat Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot in the head in January.

"It is a long road to recovery from where we are," Manley said.

Stow had been weaned off two of the five anti-seizure medications used to stop what doctors called nearly uncontrollable seizures shortly after the March 31 attack. Doctors were also lowering the doses of the remaining anti-seizure medications.

The drugs themselves can lower brain activity, which has made measuring the severity of the actual damage to Stow's brain difficult, Manley said.

Stow, a father of two, was moved last month from Los Angeles to San Francisco General Hospital, which has a top trauma center, to be closer to home.

Too little is known about traumatic brain injuries to predict how quickly or even whether Stow would recover further, Manley said. Doctors likely won't have a clear sense for months of where Stow's recovery will plateau, which could be anywhere from his current condition to a full return to work, he said.

"We are grateful for the public's continued concern and support," Stow's family said in a written statement. "We are encouraged by Bryan's improvement."

Giovanni Ramirez, 31, the main suspect in Stow's beating, was sent back to prison Monday for 10 months for a parole violation involving access to a gun. Police arrested him May 22 in connection with the attack on Stow and have held him since then on the parole issue. He has not been charged in the beating.

Ramirez's lawyers assert their client was nowhere near Dodger Stadium at the time of the attack. Attorney Jose Romero has said 11 family members and friends have provided an alibi for Ramirez, saying he was at an aunt's house.

Arizona death may be linked to European E. coli (AP)

ATLANTA ? The death of an Arizona man who recently visited Germany may be linked to the food-poisoning outbreak in Europe, health officials said Thursday.

The man, who died in mid-June, developed a serious E. coli complication that can lead to kidney failure. But officials don't know yet if he was sickened by the same bacteria strain that has hit thousands in Europe, mostly in Germany.

If confirmed, it would be the first U.S. death and sixth case tied to the outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials said the man was over 65 and lived in northern Arizona, but released few other details. His recent trip to Germany ? coupled with the kidney complication ? sparked suspicion the case was linked to the European illnesses, said Catherine Foley, an epidemiologist with the Arizona Department of Health Services.

So far, there have been five confirmed cases in the United States ? two in Michigan and one in Massachusetts, Wisconsin and North Carolina. All but one had recently been to Germany. One Michigan case apparently caught the illness from the other, a relative.

Arizona officials are not aware of anyone being infected from close contact with the deceased man, Foley said.

Officials have traced the outbreak to raw vegetable sprouts from a farm in northern Germany.

Nearly 3,700 have been reported ill in Germany, including more than 800 with the kidney complication. There have been 42 deaths reported in Germany and one in Sweden.

No confirmed cases have been seen in U.S. military personnel or their dependents that are stationed in Germany, CDC officials said. Nor have there been an increase in visits due to gastrointestinal illness at U.S. military medical facilities in Europe.

Japan seeks to extend parliament, PM clings to post (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan was set on Wednesday to extend parliament for 70 days to pass important bills as it strives to recover from an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis, but there was no guarantee the opposition would cooperate while the unpopular premier clings to his post.

The political stalemate over Prime Minister Naoto Kan's departure risks slowing efforts to recover from the disaster and delaying vital policies, including a law to sell bonds to cover the budget deficit, changes to the social security system and tax increases needed to curb huge public debt.

"If Kan is saying he will quit, he should do so. The Democrats can then elect a new leader and open an emergency parliament session," Nobuteru Ishihara, secretary-general of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), told reporters after meeting with his counterparts from other parties.

Kan, under fire for his response to the disaster, pledged this month to step down in order to quell a rebellion in his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and survive a no-confidence vote, but the premier -- Japan's fifth leader in five years -- he has declined to say when he will go.

The ambiguity has angered opposition parties, whose backing is needed to pass bills in a divided parliament, as well as Kan's critics in his own party, who are dragging their feet over proposals to double the 5 percent sales tax to fund rising social security costs and tackle public debt.

Kan has seen his support inside the DPJ dwindle while opposition efforts to oust him grow, not only because he has flip-flopped on policies but due to what even close aides term an abrasive personality.

The Democrats can extend parliament, which ends on Wednesday, without opposition parties agreeing, since they control parliament's more powerful lower house. But that could make the opposition even less likely to cooperate on legislation, which they can block in the upper house.

TAX, ENERGY REFORM

Japanese media said Kan, 64, wanted to stay on at least long enough to enact a bill enabling the government to issue bonds to fund about 40 percent of a $1 trillion budget for the fiscal year that started on April 1, a small extra budget to help with recovery from the tsunami and measures to promote renewable energy sources in the wake of the nuclear crisis.

A third extra budget, expected to top 10 trillion yen ($125 billion), will likely be submitted to parliament in late August or early September, the media reports said.

The opposition's Ishihara reiterated on Wednesday his party's demands that the Democrats give up some spending plans and increase the burden the government bears for the pension scheme in exchange for passing the deficit bond bill.

Failure to do so would shut down the government, which is a risk that even the LDP may seek to avoid in the end.

"They have to pass the bond issuance bill by the end of August. That is the general mood," said Tomoaki Iwai, a professor of political science at Nihon University, adding that the small second extra budget would also be enacted.

But the outlook is dim for changes to social security and the sales tax rise, Iwai and other analysts said, given stiff opposition from lawmakers afraid of alienating voters.

The fate of the renewable energy bill is also murky, given opposition from the biggest business lobby, which fears higher electricity costs.

Kan, who has promised to more than double the percentage of electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind power to more than 20 percent of total supply by the 2020s, wants to introduce a feed-in-tariff scheme obliging utilities to buy electricity from all types of renewable sources.

Proponents say the scheme is vital to expanding renewable energy. It would also allow utilities to pass on extra costs, which is irking both the opposition and his DPJ critics.

"The biggest reason for the political confusion is that the prime minister, who has said he will step down, is bringing up new policy issues and merely trying to extend his political life," said a commentary in the Nikkei business daily.

A 70-day extension would allow enough time for the ruling bloc to try to enact bills rejected by the upper house, which is controlled by the opposition, by overriding the chamber with a two-thirds majority in the lower house.

Even so, the DPJ would need backing from some opposition members since the party lacks a two-thirds majority in the lower house. ($1 = 80.270 Japanese Yen)
