How Can A Residential Care Home Meet The Needs Of Your Loved One ...

A residential care home provides a much needed service for the elderly. They are sometimes called Board and Care Homes, Adult Family Homes, and Foster Homes. Whatever they are called, they provide basically the same services. Different states call them by different names. They provide a natural environment for elderly who need some assistance, but not to the level of more restrictive environments.

In these placements, there is no intensive nursing services allowed. The definition of what intensive nursing services involves varies from state to state. Some will not allow catheters to be maintained, or colostomy sites cared for, or even injections to be given. Other allow those services but limit other things.

Basic needs like toilet care, bathing, and feeding, as well as incontinence in both urinary and bowels can be cared for in this arrangement. Family members may not desire to or feel confident caring for these needs themselves. They would prefer the elderly person be in a facility that can meet all these needs in an expeditious manner.

There is a more homelike environment in these facilities than can be found in those providing intensive nursing services 24/7. There is usually a limit of six residents to each, with two people provided services. This give a reasonable ratio of 1:3.

This arrangement if excellent for persons suffering from Alzheimer?s Disease. They only have a couple of people in charge to adjust to, and there are not a lot of people in the facility for them to adjust to, lessening their confusion. They can be kept busy with a variety of activities planned by the persons taking care of them, helping to eliminate some of the frustration and difficulty with this condition.

For those who don?t require the intensity of nursing home services, this arrangement is very cost effective. It is only about half of what nursing costs are. They provide the degree of assistance needed, at a fraction of the cost. Of course, if the more intensive nursing services are needed, this option would not be appropriate to the level of services needed.

Deciding to place a loved one in a placement outside the family is never easy. However, in the residential care home, it is so like a family placement that is makes it a little easier. It is less expensive than other arrangements, and helps the person be more independent. This makes it an easier decision than if the person has to be placed in a more restrictive environment.
