Boston (SmartAboutHealth) ? A new prostate cancer drug from Exelixis Inc. known as cabozantinib has been proven to be effective in helping fight the disease.

A mid-stage trial has been conducted on a group of prostate cancer patients using the new drug from Exelixis Inc.

The drug was tested on a group of 108 patients in total to see if the drug would help in their treatment of the disease.

The trial lasted for a period of 12-weeks as they allowed treatment to be carried out and to analyze if any benefits were seen.

What researchers found was that patients who received the drug cabozantinib, reduced the risk of their prostate cancer progressing by 87%.

This is a major reduction and shows that this new drug has the ability to actually slow prostate cancer from progressing further.

This oral drug cuts off blood flow to tumors and by doing so, slows the growth of them.

The patients tested in this trial suffered from bone lesions, which can lead to bone disease in patients.

For the purpose of the study, half of the group received a placebo, while the other half received the drug cabozantinib.

The results of the study has been presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology this past Monday.
