In advance of President Barack Obama's speech on jobs and unemployment, Yahoo! News asked its readers and contributors to tell us what subjects they'd like to hear Obama address. Below is a first-person perspective from a reader.

Things here in Hamlet, Ind., don't change much from year to year. We're a small rural community, one of those towns the kids always say they can't wait to get out of.

For the past several years, most of Hamlet's population has been waiting for a new plant to open, something that was put on hold because of the state of the economy. For myself, as a single mom and college student, that plant opening may mean that there will still be a school here to teach at once I obtain my license. At 38 years old, I have no wish to relocate.

I'm a freelance writer. Even in the worst of economic times, I've been able to find work because I've been able to create a job for myself, having been self-employed far more often than having been employed by someone else. This allows me have a flexible enough of a schedule to be able to raise my son and continue my education. But, I've had to rely on grants and student loans to supplement my income so that I can make this balance work.

I'm eager to hear President Obama's speech. For me and many other college students, it may mean the difference between continuing on with a dream and wondering what happens to college dropouts. The summer finances for college have already been canceled. My school happens to go year round, so this didn't make a big difference to me, but for many others, it added on a year or two to their educational plan. If the student loan program is modified or ended completely, or the Pell grants are eliminated or lowered, it may mean that I have to rethink my future.

As a single mom, the tax situation can also alter my plans and those of other single moms with a limited income. Without the Earned Income Credit (EIC), my finances will change significantly.

What I hope to hear Obama say is that there will be no changes to the educational programs or the EIC. But I have to plan for the worst. Watching his speech will be like watching my life plan being set up like evolving dominoes. If these programs are eliminated or modified, then a whole new course of action will be called for, not just in my life, but nationwide.

The bottom line is that unless we actually want to eliminate the lower and middle classes, America has to stop outsourcing jobs and continue with the push for higher education. Even if we don't stop outsourcing jobs, we still have to continue with the push for education because there won't be any jobs here at all for people without degrees. To that end, I'd like to hear Obama say that tax breaks for large corporations and those who outsource are going to be limited.

The worst-case scenario is that tax breaks for the rich will continue and funds that are now available to those in a lower tax brackets will be eliminated. In that case, the poor are going to have to get even more creative in order to survive. I'd like to see Obama present the details as to how he plans to prevent that and move forward.

MADISON, Wis. ? A Madison-based clinic is trying to track down hundreds of patients after a nurse apparently spent years improperly using diabetic injection devices on them, potentially exposing them to blood-borne diseases such as HIV.

Dean Clinic officials on Monday began trying to contact by phone and letter 2,345 patients who saw the nurse between 2006 and when she left her job two weeks ago. They want the patients to come in for testing for HIV as well as hepatitis B and C. State and local health officials said they're monitoring the situation, but no one had detected any diseases connected to the nurse as of late Monday afternoon.

The clinic's chief medical officer, Dr. Mark Kaufman, said the nurse is a certified diabetic educator. Her job called for her to train newly-diagnosed diabetics on how to inject insulin and test their blood sugar levels.

Clinic officials declined to identify the nurse.

Earlier this month, another clinic employee reported that the nurse was improperly using a device known as an insulin demonstration pen, which resembles a large hypodermic needle and injects insulin into the bloodstream, as well as a more widely-known finger prick device for blood tests, Kaufman said.

The nurse was supposed to demonstrate how to use the pen on pillows and oranges, not on the patients themselves, Kaufman said. But an internal investigation showed she was using the same pen on people. She used clean needles each time, but using the pen on a person could allow a microscopic backwash of blood to flow back into the pen's reservoir, potentially contaminating it and putting the next patient at risk, Kaufman said.

The finger prick device is supposed to be used on people, but the entire device should be used only once per patient, Kaufman said. The nurse changed needles but used the same handle from patient to patient, creating a risk that blood could get onto it, dry and infect the next fresh needle and patient.

The nurse left her job on Aug. 10, the same week the other clinic employee came forward about her practices, said Dr. Craig Samitt, the clinic's chief executive officer. He declined to say whether she resigned or was terminated.

Samitt and Kaufman said the nurse was experienced, noting her certification as a diabetic educator, but it's unclear why she didn't follow the devices' guidelines or clinic protocols. Clinic officials have interviewed her, but Samitt declined to elaborate.

"This is an ongoing investigation," he said.

Kaufman said the nurse's actions probably pose little danger to the patients. The HIV virus degrades in a matter of days, and the hepatitis strains can't survive for more than a month, he noted.

It's unclear just how many of the nurse's patients underwent an insulin pen or finger prick demonstration or even if anyone who did was infected with a blood disease and could have passed it on.

"The risk is minimal, but remains a theoretical risk," Kaufman said.

Dean Clinic includes about 720 health care providers located throughout southern Wisconsin. Samitt declined to say where the nurse worked.

Stephanie Smiley, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services, said agency officials learned of the potential exposures Monday morning and have been in contact with the clinic. They also have notified the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she said.

"This is a very serious situation and it appears that Dean Clinic is taking the appropriate steps to notify patients of possible exposure and performing follow-up testing as necessary," she said in an email.

A CDC spokeswoman had no immediate comment. Officials with the state Department of Safety and Professional Services, which regulates health care providers, declined comment.

In the last few years, poor hygiene practices at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals in Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee led to warnings to nearly 13,000 veterans that they should be checked for possible blood borne diseases.

Tests so far have found eight possible infections with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and 61 cases of hepatitis B or C, the VA has said. However, it's not known how many of these cases, if any, were from treatment at VA hospitals or from unrelated causes. Testing often is unable to determine the origin of such infections, and some people may have been infected before their VA care occurred without knowing it.

Hepatitis C infections also can resolve on their own over time. Certain medicines can help the body clear the virus ? why it's important for anyone at potential risk to be tested as soon as possible.

It's not known how common infection breaches like this are at private hospitals. The VA ones came to light because the VA is a government entity and must report such incidents.

With out access code to online self assessment, you can?t do your home work assignment. Publisher of the book won?t give you access code since book wasn?t bought through them, but you can purchase the code from them for an extra charge. Luckily my professor didn?t require us to do the self-assessments, they were only recommended. Also, I thought I was purchasing the student textbook, I entered the exact ISBN number and everything, but when the book arrived, it was the ?Instructor?s Review Copy?. The textbook contained all of the necessary text for my class, but when I opened the box the Saturday before class began (the following Monday), I was very shocked & worried I had the wrong book. The book did get me through my class successfully, and the book was good. It arrived quickly, was packaged properly & was in great condition.

Madam Isshe (2.05) has gone '4-3-2' in her last three starts and, even as non-Mensa member, I can see what the next number in her sequence should be at Chepstow today. If my ship ever sails home, I'll definitely be sending Malcolm Saunders a couple of horses, both because of the exploits of his excellent veteran sprinter Repertory and because of his general record of extracting wins from moderate horses.

With an official rating of just 52, Madam Isshe is clearly a very ordinary performer but, after taking three runs to get her eye back in this season, she has shown more consistency than most of these rivals in her recent spins and is back down to the same mark from which she registered her only previous success at Bath this year.

She also has the services of Jake Payne in the saddle, who in my view would be the best rider in this race, a contest restricted to jockeys who have ridden less than 10 winners.

Paul Hanagan should have a good day at Newcastle, with Warcrown (2.15) even-money to make amends for his disastrous debut at Goodwood last month. Richard Fahey had made no bones about the fact that Warcrown was considered his best two-year-old, bar none, before that race and evens could look big if he can do on the track what he clearly does at home.

A half-brother to George Washington and Grandera, Lordofthehouse (5.10) seems not to have inherited much of the ability of his famous siblings, but an illustration of the unpredictable nature of breeding racehorses comes from the fact that, even in winning a race, he has achieved more than three of the other six horses produced by his dam, Bordighera.

Lordofthehouse has thrived for moving up in distance and struck up an immediate rapport with Hanagan when winning at Haydock three weeks ago, battling back to beat Man Of God, having been headed at the furlong-pole. A 4lb higher mark looks perfectly manageable.

Over the jumps, it will be a major disappointment if Priceless Art (2.15) doesn't take the opener at Bangor and I'd be a backer, even at 1-2. Rated highly by Alan Swinbank, he hasn't always looked the easiest of rides, but the stable are in much better form now than when he disappointed a couple of times in the spring and, if anyone is going to persuade him to find as much he needs to under pressure, it's Tony McCoy.

Not that I expect Priceless Art to have to work too hard to beat these rivals. Although he has still to get his head in front in three starts over hurdles, his bumper form should mean that he has far too much speed for winning point-to-pointer Lough Derg Way.

Incidentally, McCoy has a fair chance of going through the card at Bangor, with six short-priced mounts. I remember him having five at Kempton on Boxing Day one time, but I'm pretty sure he's never managed six winners at one meeting before.

Tipping competition returns tomorrow

As it's a Bank Holiday, we're holding over the start of this week's competition until tomorrow, Tuesday, when we will all need something to divert us from the fact of being back at work.

In the meantime, last week's 'winner', johne5knuckle, should hopefully be enjoying his prize, a day at Cartmel races with a night at the Swan Hotel to follow. In fact, it was zizkov123 who won last week, but he sportingly declared himself unable to take the prize and passed it on to johne as the runner-up.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Plaintiff lawyers claimed a victory on Friday when a federal judge overseeing hundreds of lawsuits against BP and others over last year's big oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico allowed much of the case to move ahead, including punitive damages claims.

"We are very pleased with the ruling," said Stephen Herman, a lead attorney for the plaintiffs, who include more than 100,000 individuals, businesses and property owners alleging spill-related losses. "The court agreed with us on all major points."

A spokeswoman for BP, the main defendant, said the company had no immediate comment.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans allows claims for punitive damages under general maritime law to move forward. BP and other defendants had asserted in court filings that the Oil Pollution Act does not allow plaintiffs to collect punitive damages.

The ruling dismissed some claims against BP and its co-defendants, including state law claims, which Barbier said are "preempted by maritime law." It also dismissed general maritime negligence claims against defendants Anadarko and Mitsui's MOEX Offshore.

The judge also ruled that plaintiffs "have plausibly alleged" Oil Pollution Act claims related to the drilling moratorium and a Gulf Coast cleanup program set up in the wake of the oil spill. Oil Pollution Act claims against Anadarko were kept in the litigation.

The 39-page, 16-part ruling applies to non-governmental claims of economic loss and property damage. It does not cover claims brought by state and local governments that are also included in the consolidated litigation.

The case is In Re: Oil Spill by the Oil Rig "Deepwater Horizon" in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, No. 2:10-md-02179.

Nicholson Baker. Click image to expand. Nicholson BakerIf one is expecting Nicholson Baker to be wild or outrageous, 30 seconds in his presence will reveal him to be none of those things. He is tall, gentlemanly, soft-spoken.

Since he lives in a farmhouse in Maine, and I live in New York, we meet in the soothing, grey-and-beige interior of L'Espalier in Boston. He arrives in a straw hat, plaid jacket, sneakers.

Both of us are a little out of place in this restaurant amid the ladies who shop on Newbury Street: him because you can almost smell the salty air and wide open Maine sky on him, and me because I am wearing a black silk romper and a red plastic bangle that, let's just say, blended in a little better in New York City.

Baker is probably best known for his highbrow dirty books, for books like Vox and The Fermata, as well as his innovative first novel, The Mezzanine, with its artfully and obsessively spun analysis of daily life. The book was based on the years he spent temping, specifically one year as an oil analyst on Wall Street, riding the escalator to go out to lunch and the sublime daydreams that ensued.

All of his novels interest themselves with reproducing the minutiae of inner life, with what Baker calls "the white noise" in our heads, and many of them involve showy technical feats and fireworks. Altogether, he occupies a strange place in the American literary scene: respected but offbeat, a great stylist with controversial or eccentric obsessions.

His new book, House of Holes , is an outrageous, surrealist sex fantasy. It's "out there" as he puts it, even for someone who once wrote an entire literary novel about phone sex. The premise of the novel is that people disappear through portals ? a straw, a dryer, a tunnel ? into a sexual spa where even the weirdest fantasies are fulfilled, and you can have sex with trees and lakes and headless men, among other things.

The whole time Baker was writing House of Holes he was thinking he would publish it under a pseudonym. Writing under a different name liberated him to explore wilder and stranger fantasies. "The Fermata was about as far as I could go under my own name," he explains. "It was exciting to feel I was writing in a style that wasn't Nick Baker's style." But when he delivered the manuscript his publisher convinced him that he should publish it under his own name because people would know it was him anyway, and by then he figured the usefulness of the pseudonym had played itself out.

He wrote the novel in the car, at Starbucks, in Friendly's restaurants, often in the middle of the night, getting up at 3.30am and going to the kitchen table, or outside if it was warm and there was a moon. In the end he had a massive stack of pages of little ?pornographic vignettes, which he whittled down.

I ask him if he is at all worried about the book going out into the world, and he says, "I don't worry too much. I always have the illusion that it will be fine."

In a funny way he is more exposed in this book than his others because he is laying bare his fantasies. For some reason, it's almost more intimate and confessional to write about crazy scenarios you find arousing than a more realistic or straightforward autobiographical novel might be. As he put it, "Things are in this book because I found them arousing. I was excited by writing this book. There is no point in doing it if you are not. You know the worry is, is it too tame? Is it too nice? Is it too weird? Is it too Dr Seuss-y? There is a review that says that. I kind of like that."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jim Carrey is launching his new website with a bang. The 49-year-old actor posted a video love letter to "The Help" star Emma Stone on www.jimcarreytrulife.com Wednesday that many online deemed "creepy." The one-minute, 53-second video shows Carrey speaking into a handheld camera and sincerely professing his love for the 22-year-old actress.

Carrey says Stone is "all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but smart, and kindhearted" and that "if I were a lot younger, I would marry you." He goes on to say they would have "chubby little freckle-faced kids."

The popular video crashed Carrey's new site early Thursday. Carrey said on Twitter that the video "was a comedy routine."

Stone has not responded publicly to the video. Her publicist did not reply to an email seeking comment Thursday.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) ? Two dozen gunmen burst into a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, doused it with a flammable liquid and started a fire that trapped gamblers inside, killing at least 32 people and injuring a dozen more, authorities said.

The fire at the Casino Royale in Monterrey, a city that has seen a surge in violence this year, represented one of the deadliest attacks on an entertainment center in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in late 2006.

"This is a night of sadness for Mexico," said federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire in a televised address. "An unspeakable, repugnant, unacceptable act of terror has been committed."

"These unspeakable acts of terror will not go unpunished," Poire said, adding federal authorities were aiding state forces in the investigation.

State police officials quoted survivors as saying about two dozen armed men burst into the casino, apparently to rob it, and began dousing the premises with fuel from tanks they brought with them. The officials were not authorized to be quoted by name for security reasons.

With shouts and profanities, the attackers told the customers and employees to get out. But many terrified customers and employees fled further inside the building, where they died trapped amid the flames and thick smoke that soon billowed out of the building.

Angel Flores, a commander of the Monterrey Green Cross rescue service, said that 28 bodies had been recovered from the casino and that more were likely to be recovered. He said most died of asphyxiation.

Other Green Cross and Nuevo Leon Civil Defense rescue workers later said 32 bodies had been recovered and video footage showed workers continuing to remove bodies well into the night.

Monterrey Mayor Fernando Larrazabal said many of the bodies were found inside the casino's bathrooms, where employees and customers had locked themselves to escape the gunmen.

While there was no immediate information linking the attack to drug cartels, Monterrey has seen bloody turf battles between the Zetas and Gulf cartels in recent months. Once Mexico's symbol of development and prosperity, the city is seeing this year's drug-related murders on a pace to double last year's and triple those of the year before.

Maria Tomas Navarro, 42, stood weeping at the edge of the police tape stretched in front of the smoke-stained casino building. She was hoping for word of her brother, 25-year-old Genaro Navarro Vega, who had worked in the casino's bingo area.

Navarro said she tried calling her brother's cellphone. "But he doesn't answer. I don't know what is happening," she said. "There is nobody to ask."

Larrazabal said the casino, in a well-off part of Monterrey, had been closed by authorities in May for building an expansion without a permit, but a judge later granted the owner an injunction to continue operating.

Initial reports said 11 people had been killed, but the death toll climbed as emergency personnel and firefighters searched the casino building. Medics treated survivors for smoke inhalation.

State police officials initially said witnesses reported hearing three explosions before the fire started, but later said a flammable material was used. The officials were not authorized to be quoted by name for security reasons.

The reports of explosions may have been the sound of the ignition of the liquid.

It was the second time in three months that the Casino Royale was targeted. Gunmen struck it and three other casinos on May 25, when the gunmen sprayed the Casino Royale with bullets, but no was reported injured in that attack.

Last month, gunmen killed 20 people at a bar in Monterrey. The attackers sprayed the bar with rounds from assault rifles, and police later found bags of drugs at the bar.

A week ago, I got to catch up with old friends and make new ones at the Intellectual Property Scholars Conference. This year it was held in Chicago at Depaul. Best Practices for the Law of the Horse:
Teaching Cyberlaw (and Law) with Online Role-Playing Simulations

Judge Frank Easterbrook once mocked Cyberlaw as ?the law of the horse,? a subject lacking in cohesion and therefore unworthy of inclusion in the law school curriculum. This Article responds squarely to Easterbrook?s challenge and concludes that Cyberlaw is a course that can be taught particularly well in law schools when learning occurs through live, online role-playing imulations. These techniques have been successfully used by the author for the past three years, casting students as lawyers in realistic simulations that unfold on the live internet. Unlike other Articles responding to Easterbrook, this Article bypasses a doctrinal or theoretical approach, avoiding (for now) the longstanding debate between Cyberlaw exceptionalists and unexceptionalists. Because Easterbrook?s attack is ultimately educationally rooted, the Article takes a pedagogical approach, concluding that Cyberlaw presents a unique opportunity for holistic and experiential legal education that combines doctrine, theory, skills, and values in a highly engaging manner. Accordingly, in light of the recent studies Best Practices in Legal Education and the Carnegie Report, the Article explains how the author came to develop such a course and outlines how such a course might be structured. This Article examines how live websites can be used to create engaging and holistic simulations that tie together doctrine, theory, skills, and values in ways impossible to achieve with the case method. In this Article, the author discusses observations stemming from his experiences teaching law courses using live, online roleplaying simulations that cast students in the role of attorneys. The Article concludes that such simulations have significant benefits for law students, and surprisingly, can also benefit scholars who use simulations proactively to deepen the synergies between their teaching and scholarship. However, the resources required for simulations may also exacerbate long-standing systemic tensions in legal education, particularly regarding?institutional resources as well as the sometimes conflicting roles of faculty as teacherscholars. You may not realize just how important your wrists are until one of them gets hurt. There are basically two types of wrist injury. One is acute, such as a sprain or a fracture. Squeeze the ball for 5 seconds and release, then repeat 12 to 15 times.

2. Ease Back Into It

A wrist that has been immobilized may become stiff from lack of use. Some gentle stretching can help restore flexibility. It is recommended pressing on a tabletop with the palm of your hand. Bend your wrist until you reach the angle of pain, then back off just a hair. By riding the edge of discomfort and stopping just before you feel pain, you are doing beneficial stretching. Hold this position or as long as you find comfortable, working up to 2 minutes. Repeat three to four times daily.

3. Treat It Gingerly

A compress made from ginger can draw out toxins and accelerate the healing process. To make the compress, simply boil some grated gingerroot, allow it to cool, place it in a moist washcloth, and lay the washcloth over your wrist. The washcloth should be as hot as you can tolerate. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and repeat every other hour.

4. Keep Still

For a more severe case of tendinitis, immobilizing the joint with an elastic wrist support may provide some relief. You will find these devices in drugstores and medical supply stores. It is recommended wearing one while you sleep, to prevent your wrist from twisting awkwardly as well as during your waking hours, when your wrist is in use. The support should keep your wrist in about 10-degree dorsiflex position. In other words, if your palm is facing downward, your wrist should be bent slightly upward.

5. Put It On The Rocks

Ice is a vasoconstrictor. That means it decreases the blood supply in your wrist, which helps reduce any swelling. It is recommended putting ice cubes in a plastic bag, wrapping the bag in a towel, and applying the pack to your wrist for about 20 minutes. Repeat the treatment four to six times a day.

Elevation is not as crucial for an injured wrist as for an injured ankle or knee. Still, it can help keep any swelling down. Just be sure to prop your wrist so that it is above heart level.

7. Turn On The Heat

Once any swelling subsides, or if your wrist simply feels stiff and achy, heat can help. It is recommended to follow these instructions. Rub vinegar on your wrist, cover it with plastic, then apply a heating pad wrapped in a towel for about 20 minutes. You can repeat this treatment every hour as needed.

Winslet's former Sense and Sensibility costar, Emma Thompson. agrees. "I'm not fiddling about with myself," the 52-year-old actress insists. The polarities of darkness and light have been central to human cultural imaginings since our origins.

In the 5th century B.C. there was Zoroastrian religion, based on the eternal battle between darkness (evil) and light (spiritual purity). In the modern world we have the mythic conflict between Luke Skywalker in his white tunic and his black-shrouded, fallen father, Darth Vader. Given our penchant for pulling the world apart into this kind of dichotomy, it is, perhaps, no wonder that the recent discovery of the darkest of dark planets has made news.

A few weeks ago, two astronomers announced the discovery of TrES-2b via the Kepler spacecraft. The planet is a so-called "Hot Jupiter" ? a large gas giant orbiting extremely close to its sun-like star (the whole system is about 750 light years away from us).

What makes TrES-2b so remarkable is its refusal to give back light. The scientific word for reflectivity is albedo. The Earth reflects about 37 percent or 0.37 of the light it receives from the sun. That is why we present such a beautiful bright blue face to the universe.

TrES-2b is another story entirely. It bounces back less than 1 percent (0.01) of the light it receives from its star. That means the planet is blacker than coal. Seen from space, TrES-2b would barely be visible.

It is not clear yet why TrES-2b is so dark. It may be that the intense heat from the nearby star has formed strange, light-absorbing compounds in the planet's atmosphere.

"It's a mystery as to what's causing it to be so dark," co-discover David Kipping told Space.com. "There's a good chance it's a chemical we haven't even thought of yet."
