Summer Reading For Sharp Entrepreneurs | "No Bull" Chicagoland ...

Joe Sugarman & Steve Sipress

Joe Sugarman & Steve Sipress

Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, and although it?s not yet officially ?Summer,? there?s nothing like a few 90+ degree days to get everyone?s mind turning to thoughts of rest, relaxation and? summer reading.

All wealth-minded entrepreneurs, small business owners and sales professionals know that the money is in the marketing, while the vast majority of business people mistakenly focus instead on improving only the quality of whatever happens to be their deliverable, to the severe detriment of their bank accounts.

So for all of you sharp marketers, here is my list of the most basic small business marketing books that are absolutely essential reading for all entrepreneurs. My copies of all of these are dog-eared, highlighted and underlined, and none are ever more than a few feet from my desk:

Dan Kennedy, ?The Ultimate Marketing Plan? A very basic overview of direct response marketing for beginners who are unfamiliar with and/or have never used it to grow their businesses.

Al Ries and Jack Trout, ?The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing: Violate Them at Your Own Risk!? and ?Positioning: The Battle For Your Mind? Both are quick and easy reads, full of common sense wisdom that, unfortunately, is not very common. Good for the very basic purpose of establishing a marketing mindset (but other, more in-depth study and research is necessary to become an effective marketer).

Robert Collier, ?The Robert Collier Letter Book? Pure genius from one of the all-time greatest copywriters. In addition to the many examples of the very best ?salesmanship in print,? Collier gives step-by-step advice on the #1 skill anyone can have: how to sell with the written word. Just reading some of his classic salesletters over and over helped me recognize effective copywriting and start creating it myself.

Jon Spoelstra, ?Ice To The Eskimos? and ?Marketing Outrageously? Two fun-to-read books full of actionable ideas and real-life examples of their implementation by a hired gun of the pro sports world, often called upon to turn around under-performing franchises. Even if you don?t actually use any of the author?s strategies or tactics, just reading these two books will put you in the right ?problem-solving? mindset to stop feeling helpless or powerless and start realizing that you can achieve success even if you ? and everyone else around you ? thinks you can?t.

Claude Hopkins, ?My Life In Advertising? and ?Scientific Advertising? Two classics by one of the true pioneers and masters of direct response marketing and copywriting. If you don?t read and study Hopkins? simple formula for advertising success, you?re likely to become an ?advertising victim? and believe that the garbage that passes for modern advertising is anything more than the total waste of money that it is.

Eldridge and Eldridge, ?How To Position Yourself As The Obvious Expert? Very easy to read, with plenty of advice and examples of the power of getting prospects to chase you instead of the opposite. After reading this, you?ll know how and why to use basic ?information marketing? strategies and tactics to revolutionize your business by attracting more and better customers, clients or patients than ever before.

Denny Hatch, ?Million Dollar Mailings? An amazing collection of some of the most successful direct response marketing salesletter ever, with thorough explanations of how they were put together. Use it to learn exactly what makes a salesletter great, or as a ?swipe file? to create your own multi-million dollar pieces, or both. Just make sure to use it. Fairly expensive ? and easily worth 1,000 times the price to an action-taker.

David Ogilvy, ?Ogilvy On Advertising? Absolutely essential for anyone who either invests any of their hard-earned money into advertising, or who just wants to learn why the overwhelming majority of what passes for modern advertising is almost completely ineffective at best, if not completely wasteful.

John Caples, ?Tested Advertising Methods? Another phenomenal book on direct response marketing and what really works. Caution: The most current revision is not up to the standards of the classic version ? make sure to get the 4th Edition or earlier.

Joe Sugarman, ?Advertising Secrets of the Written Word? This Chicago native is one of the all-time most respected, admired and innovative marketing geniuses, and one of the best teachers of direct response marketing. This book is an entertaining and informative read, full of real-life examples and immediately-actionable advice.

Victor Schwab, ?How To Write A Good Advertisement?
Another classic that must be a part of every serious businessperson?s library. Even if you read no further than the opening chapter?s understated ?100 Good Headlines and Why They Were so Profitable,? you?ll have gotten a lot more than your money?s worth and greatly improved your marketing skill. This chapter alone has saved me untold hours and dollars attempting to ?reinvent the wheel? by providing me with winning headline templates ? and the psychology behind each of them ? that have brought in millions of dollars for me and my clients.

Robert Cialdini, ?Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion? Very entertaining and engaging, with plenty of stories and scientific research to back up every point. I have personally used all six of the basic principles of influence that Cialdini teaches to bring in millions of dollars in dozens of different businesses. All of direct response marketing comes down to math and behavioral psychology, and this is the best book ever written on what makes consumers take action.

Eugene Schwartz, ?Breakthrough Advertising? This book is extremely rare and out of print. You should be in no rush to get it until you?ve read all of the other books on this list multiple times. It is extremely advanced and a very difficult read ? definitely only for the most advanced direct marketing students and practitioners. That said, it is easily the most powerful and potentially life-changing book on this list.

If you read, study and use these books over the summer, or even within the next year or two, your income and lifestyle will forever be changed in a major, positive way.

Oh, and by the way?

If you?ve always wanted to write a book of your own, and you?re in the Chicagoland area, you?ll want to meet world-famous author and publisher Adam Witty on Monday, June 18th at 7:00pm and learn:

?How To Easily Write A Book (In 1 Day Or Less), Use It To Grow Your Business, And Make A King?s Ransom?

Who knows? Maybe your book will make a ?best of? list like this one someday ? or it will just make you a whole lot of money?

RemodModesto.com ? Home Improvement Jobs Have One Number ...

Many people do not learn how important safety is until they get hurt doing a home-improvement project. Some injuries can actually be quite severe, and even cause death, depending upon the severity. Typically, slipping accidents top the list of the most common incidents that lead to injuries at home. Falling from the top of your house when trying to do a roof repair is also a very common injury.

If you do repairs, and if you use a ladder, you might find yourself falling if it is not properly secure. A ladder must be situated appropriately and secured before ever using it. Follow these easy tips and you will be safer than ever when getting things done at home.

Well, we hope you are duly impressed with just this little bit about mold. To make things even better, you just need to push the envelope a little bit by discovering more beyond this article.

Yes, you will not only understand this better, but the knowledge you gain will have a positive impact. There are tremendous benefits to be had once you reach that particular place. We all want to have as much control as possible, even though we know we cannot control everything, but still ? knowledge lets you be in a position to respond better to events. You must always maintain your tools in a proper manner to keep them running. Many have purchased tools for thousands of dollars. But if you fail to take proper care of them you are often asking for trouble. Very often an accident with power tools results from improperly cared for tools. If you have power saws, then you may already know what using a dull and old blade is like. This obviously can lead to a seriously dangerous scenario where the blade breaks. Not servicing your tools on a regular basis can lead to safety threats that you do not want to have. It is in your best interest to do regular maintenance on your tools.

Taking care of rags that you may have lying around on your floor or work area may not be very safe unless stored correctly.

There is a concept of fire loading that is often heard in industrial settings. The more flammable material you have in one spot, the greater the fire load. Flammable solvents soaked into this type of material must be disposed of properly. It is best to put these in a container that is airtight.

There are any number of possible scenarios with electrical hazards and safety. Some buildings are very old so you need to pay careful attention what you?re doing. Over time, expansion and contraction of the metal screws may cause them to loosen allowing for live wires. Electrical wires that are grounded may be hot or electrical which can cause physical damage if you grab them. If your installation is brittle, it could be a byproduct of lighting fixtures in the same room. Conductors such as wires that are exposed due to flaking insulation may cause a safety hazard. Therefore when working with electrical equipment and parts, be aware of this. Many people don?t even think about safety when making basic home improvements. Savvy home improvers know, safety is a must. Keep yourself and your whole family safe by taking the extra safety precautions outlined above. Remember, you can never be too safe!

The above information was put together with great care because we know the value of accurate and timely material.

There are so many who have been helped with information just like this, and we also know that on our own end. This is definitely not where your progress ends, though, and therefore continue your quest to know more about mold and its dangers. Before you try to take any kind of solid action, be very sure of what you want to do and how you plan to approach it.

We never have any problems at all in disclosing that what I offer in my material may or may not be comprehensive. Each of the points covered will always have a sizable amount of background information that is an organic part of it.

Lean More About the Most Popular Internet Marketing Lies ...

Internet marketing is pretty much the most popular business model on the Internet today. There are lots of success stories within the IM world that can make you want to do your business online. The sad thing is that Internet Marketing is full of people who tell lies and they are really hard to avoid. You find people lying left, right and center about stuff to sell you their own stuff. It can all be really confusing and hard to get any sort of straight answers about anything. The more you get trapped in this web of lies, the more complicated things become. The article below goes in-depth in explaining how you can avoid believing in these Internet marketing lies?

A common lie that you find in the Internet marketing world is where you?re told that you don?t need to know the how, and you can still make an x amount of money. How is it possible to make money doing an activity that you do not understand or know how to do? No matter what kind of niche you want to target, you need to understand the basics of IM if you want to succeed. There are quite a lot of Internet marketers out there that seem to truly believe that it is possible to make lots of money and find lots of success without having any sort of specific kinds of knowledge. Honest success and profit through Internet Marketing can only be done after you have learned how things work and how it all fits together. An incredibly popular lie that you will often be told is that you can earn a full living all from the comfort of your own home. But here is the truth: as soon as you see the phrase ?work from home? run away as fast as you possibly can. There are lots of opportunities that you can use to your own advantage within the world of IM. Of course, all of those alluring offers are usually lies. It?s all a ploy to get your money and nothing else. These people do not care if you build your own business and they definitely don?t want to help you build your own empire. It?s important to keep your focus on the ?true? stuff. You should focus entirely on creating businesses that count.

Did you ever consider or think you would find as much information on septic tank pumping as you have?

All you need to do is follow along because we have this plus much more in store. But be careful about dismissing anything too fast if at first glance it seems like it does not apply to you.

Everything is related in one way or another, and that is part of the beauty of it all. We make a suggestion here and there, and what we are trying to do is spark your own creative thinking.

But there is much more to come, today, and you will see that it will come together quite nicely. That is never a bad thing even though it can seem like a lot to take in. A really obvious lie that gets told in modern Internet marketing circles is that all you need is traffic and you will find success. This isn?t the truth at all! You do not need any traffic, you need targeted traffic. Even when you have that, success takes more. This is because you also have to have something called conversion. You can get so much more from your targeted traffic if the product or service that you are selling is actually able to convert. So gaining visitors is only one part of this important equation. Converting as many sales as possible is also an important part of it.

Creating a sustainable Internet marketing business really is possible. IM success really is possible if you take all of the right steps at all of the right times. To get there though, the first thing you need to do is apply the normal hardcore rules of business to it. It is also really important that you stop buying the nonsense that other people are selling to you about instantly being able to make money. Look at things from a real-world perspective. Make sure that you aren?t delusional about the approach you take when running your IM business. You need to be realistic because that is how you guarantee your long term success.

You will find, like we all have, that acquiring new knowledge involves dedication and responsibilities, and that applies to portable generators, as well. After so much time since the internet came into being, one of the biggest problems facing us is having so much information available.

It can be very frustrating due to so many people being involved in one area and contributing a lot of information.

What we are getting at is the absolute need for you to be watchful in your desire to study this material, or anything else. After awhile you will become very adept at separating truth from fiction.

Hello! First of all, this sounds like a really awesome roleplay, and I'd love to join. I have one quick question, though. The first rule says that we need to provide links to at least two character-driven roleplays we have been in. I am a fairly new member to this site, so I haven't been in very many roleplays on this site, however, I am an avid roleplayer on multiple other sites. Are we allowed to provide links to roleplays on other sites to qualify for the first rule? Or should I just post some examples of my posts?

Memorial Day: Among post-9/11 veterans, deepening antiwar sentiment

This Memorial Day the Iraq war is over and the Afghanistan war is winding down, but they're weighing heavily on post-9/11 veterans, 33 percent of whom said they weren't worth the cost.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / May 26, 2012

U.S. war veterans raise their hands in solidarity after throwing their medals towards the site of the NATO Summit in Chicago May 20, 2012. Nearly 50 veterans threw service medals into the street near the summit site in protest.

Despite the end of the Iraq war and the scheduled drawdown in Afghanistan, this Memorial Day arrives against a backdrop of deepening ? and some say more troublesome ? antiwar sentiment among military veterans.

One of the most vivid and replayed images of protesters at the NATO summit last weekend in Chicago was a?group of some 40?vets lined up to toss their war medals over the chain link fence to protest what former?naval officer Leah Bolger calls ?the illegal wars?of both NATO and America.?

According to a recent Pew Research Center study, 33 percent of post-9/11 veterans say that neither the war in Iraq nor in Afghanistan ?were worth the cost,? and this among a highly motivated cohort who chose to serve.

What this means, says retired US Army Col. Ann Wright, who?resigned from a State Department post in 2006 over US policies in Iraq,?is that?there is a?widening gap between the government, military policies, and the soldiers that carry them out.

?Military personnel know America will always have a military, but there is?growing concern?over the way it is being used,? says the 29-year veteran, adding that an increasing list of concerns include ?the use of?torture, illegal detentions, and both soldiers and the public being lied to about the actual reasons for going into combat.?

But in contrast to the extremely vocal and visible antiwar movements of the Vietnam?War era, many veterans in the all-volunteer military have found it harder to?mobilize effective actions, says Cameron?White, a former Marine who served two tours in Iraq before joining ?Iraq Veterans Against the War.?

The 32-year-old Pasadena?City college student, who enlisted in 2000, says??it?s harder to speak to fellow soldiers about their decision to join, as the onus is on us because we chose this.?

Many of the post-9/11 veterans who have served in what is now American?s longest-running military action, find that pressures that can fuel antiwar sentiment have ratcheted up with the all-volunteer army.

According to the Pew study, only some one half of one percent of Americans have served in the military in the past decade, the lowest rate in history. Even as an?unprecedented number of Americans ? some 80?percent ? are therefore sheltered from the war?s hardships because none of their relatives?are serving,?the pressures of military service?have increased.

In order to meet troop level requirements, many soldiers have been deployed as?many as six times ? a level unheard of prior to the all-volunteer military, points out Mike Hanie, an Air Force veteran and founder and executive director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University.

This growing antiwar sentiment within the veteran community, he says,?is?easily traced to the fact that ?the men and women who have served are returning home to communities where they feel that their service doesn?t matter.?

The veterans? ?families, friends, neighbors, and colleagues do not understand, or seem to care about our all-volunteer military and the sacrifices they have made defending our freedom,? he adds.

Veterans returning?to normal life are facing struggles that include uncertainty about possible redeployments, cutbacks in benefits, and an economy in recession. This has led to many troublesome results, including a suicide rate among post 9/11 veterans of some 18 veterans per day, says Dr. Harry Croft, a former Army doctor and a psychiatrist who has evaluated more than 7,000 veterans for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is author of the book ?I Always Sit With My Back to The Wall.?

?It?s not clear anymore what the end result is of these wars,? he says, adding?that in Iraq, for example, US troops are gone, but many vets wonder what happens now.

?We got rid of Saddam Hussein and put a democratic government in place, but the enemy still hasn?t gone away,? he notes. In addition, he says, many vets feel?that we were told before the war in Iraq that oil money was going to pay for the war, ?which of course didn?t happen.?

Afghanistan is even murkier, says Dr. Croft. ?Our troops are over there risking their lives and the Afghan people and government don?t even like us,? he says, adding ?our troops are facing suicide bombers and IEDs knowing that today might be their last day, but for what??

MARKA AIRBASE, Jordan (AP) ? Palestinian Airlines is back in the skies after being grounded for seven years by the deepening enmities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Once hailed as a symbol of Palestinian statehood dreams, the carrier is a tiny operation, with just two 48-seat turboprop planes, two weekly flights and a borrowed hub in Egypt.

But Palestinians say just being on the map again is what matters.

"My hands were shaking when I bought the ticket ... and it said the name of the carrier is Palestinian Airlines," said recent passenger Zuhair Mohammed, a 38-year-old teacher from Gaza.

The 15-year-old airline's fortunes have been closely tied to the quest for a Palestinian state.

In the late 1990s, when Palestinians appeared on the verge of a statehood deal with Israel, Palestinian Airlines operated from Gaza International Airport, flew tens of thousands of passengers a year to Middle Eastern destinations and planned to expand to Europe.

Those ambitions were crushed by the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in September 2000, following the collapse of U.S.-led peace talks. Over the next year, Israeli troops destroyed the Gaza airport, and Palestinian Airlines was forced to move its base to El-Arish, an Egyptian coastal resort about 60 kilometers from Gaza.

Seven years ago, the airline stopped flying altogether after its reservoir of passengers dried up. It had mainly served Gazans who, starting in 2005, could no longer reach El-Arish because of increasingly frequent Israeli closures of Gaza's borders.

The closures accompanied an Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 and intensified with the capture of an Israeli soldier by Gaza militants a year later and the violent takeover of Gaza by the Islamic militant Hamas in 2007.

Until last year, the vast majority of Gaza's 1.7 million residents were locked inside the territory, in part because Egypt went along with Israel and largely kept its Rafah border terminal with Gaza closed.

After the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, Rafah gradually reopened and Gazans are now able to travel, though restrictions remain, particularly for men under 40, who need Egyptian security clearance.

Palestinian Airlines once again had potential customers. On May 9 it resumed operations, starting with biweekly flights between El-Arish and Marka Airbase in the Jordanian capital of Amman. The new route means Gazans no longer have to travel to Cairo, some 350 kilometers (215 miles) from their territory, to board planes.

Mustafa Abu Dan, a Palestinian civil servant, on Sunday bought four tickets at a Gaza City travel agency for a flight to Amman. He said he's pleased to be saving time and money, but he worried that Gazans and their travel plans will always vulnerable to political upheaval.

"Rafah is the only gate for us to the world now, but still it's linked to the political developments in Egypt," said Abu Dan, 32. "I voice my hope to have our own airport again so we can travel without problems, like others."

In one of the many political twists of Palestine air travel, the carrier is owned by the Palestinian Authority, the West Bank-based political rival of Gaza's Hamas rulers.

Gaza and the West Bank lie on opposite sides of Israel, which has banned virtually all movement between the two territories. Palestinians hope that one day they will be united into a state, with east Jerusalem as its capital. All three were captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War.

The West Bank does not have an airport, and Israel is unlikely to approve Palestinian Authority plans to build one, citing security concerns. West Bank residents have to fly from neighboring Jordan.

Palestinian Airlines operates two Fokker 50 turboprop planes, remnants of the original fleet that also included a since-retired Boeing 727. The Fokkers were donated by the Netherlands and the 727 by Saudi Arabia.

During the years of idleness, Palestinian Airlines leased one of the Fokkers to an Egyptian carrier, Memphis, whose logo is still painted on the plane. The other plane is marked by black, red and green stripes on the tail, the colors of the Palestinian flag.

On Sunday, the Amman-El-Arish flight carried 27 passengers, and 44 were booked on the return trip later in the day. The flight takes an hour and 35 minutes, more than double the time needed for the direct route over Israel. The airline does not have permission to cross Israeli air space, said regional director Azmi Samaan.

Airline officials said flights to Saudi Arabia for Muslim pilgrims from Gaza are set to begin later this week, and routes to the United Arab Emirates and Turkey are being planned.

The airline hopes it will eventually turn a profit, but for now national pride and making life easier for the Gazans are more important, said Samaan.

"We want the Palestinian flag to continue flying," he said in an interview at Marka Airbase. "This is part of the independent state, to have an airline, no matter what it will cost us."

He acknowledged that the airline also represents the many setbacks over the years for Palestinian statehood hopes. When Gaza's airport was inaugurated in 1998, thousands cheered it as a milestone toward independence.

This time around, flights resumed with little fanfare.

Samaan said it's better than not flying at all.

"At least, we are there," he said. "We are in the market."

Susie Wheldon heads to Indy 500 to honor husband

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? Some days are better than others for Susie Wheldon, and there's rarely any warning what will trigger the emotional roller coaster she's been on since husband Dan Wheldon's fatal crash in last year's IndyCar finale.

A familiar coffee shop brings back a flood of memories; a song can make her sad. Most recently, it was a trip to the emergency room for a stomach bug 1-year-old son Oliver couldn't shake. In an instant, she was reliving the frantic efforts to save the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner following the Oct. 16 crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"Almost immediately when I walked in, they brought me back to a room just to wait for a doctor, and I just sat there and I instantly felt panic," she said. "I hadn't been in a hospital since, and I just saw all these machines. Something like that, that I didn't even think would be a big deal. It was just a really horrible thing.

"Took me back there again, just the panic of everything of that day."

Seven months after the accident, Wheldon heads back to the race track at the Indianapolis 500 for ceremonies honoring the defending race winner. She'll arrive Thursday and spend the weekend, accompanied by her two sons, who were present for their dad's surprise win last year, but isn't sure if she'll attend Sunday's race. In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Wheldon said she's just not sure how she'll handle the tumult of returning to the track her husband loved so much.

She couldn't do it in March, when she left town rather than face the pain of IndyCar's season opener in St. Petersburg, where she still resides in the family home with Oliver and 3-year-old Sebastian.

But Indy?

"I'm ready. I think I'm ready, or I have to be ready, because it's something that I want to do and I want to be able to be a part of that for Dan as far as having the boys there," she said. "His family is the most important part of his legacy, so we want to be there to honor him in that way as far as him being last year's winner and everything about that race that he loved so much. I feel like it's important for me to be there, and I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible."

Dan Wheldon, who also won the 500 in 2005, will be remembered on the race day ticket that features him pouring the traditional winner's bottle of milk over his head in victory lane last year. His race-winning car was on display in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum last week, will be on the Pagoda Plaza (a famed area of the race track) on Saturday and will be driven by car owner Bryan Herta in a lap of honor during Sunday's pre-race ceremonies.

Fans entering the track Sunday will be given a pair of white sunglasses, Dan's preference, to wear during tributes on the parade lap, lap 26 and lap 98, which recognize the numbers of his winning cars.

Susie Wheldon is scheduled to participate in Saturday's public drivers meeting and will accept the Champion of Champions ring on behalf of Wheldon's 2011 victory in a ceremony Thursday afternoon.

Emma Dixon, wife of driver Scott Dixon and close friend of Susie, is hopeful Wheldon can manage the many emotions this weekend will bring.

"I am a bit nervous for her, worried it is really going to tear her heart out because it's such a special place for Dan," Dixon said. "It held a lot of big memories, and I think it is going to be incredibly hard. But the one thing is, she wants to do what Dan wants her to do, and he'd want her to be holding her head up high and remembering the good times."

The Dixons have rallied around Wheldon and her sons since the accident, even temporarily relocating to St. Petersburg during the offseason. They tried to maintain a steady pace of outings and vacations, but knew Wheldon would eventually need to return to a routine for both the boys and her own healing process. They returned to Indianapolis before the start of the season, but Emma and another friend schedule a girls' getaway every two months to give Wheldon something to look forward to. Their last trip was the Kentucky Derby earlier this month.

Dixon witnessed firsthand the various stages of grief ? "shock, disbelief, and 'this can't be happening' and then around six months, the 'Oh my God, I want him back,' missing him stage" ? and knows that Wheldon has more dark days than bright. Although they've laughed and enjoyed their getaways, Dixon said she's seen only sadness in Wheldon's eyes on all but one occasion.

"Her eyes have never been the same since this happened. It was always Dan for her; they were so mad for each other and he was her absolute dream man," Dixon said. "And Dan was entering into the best times of his career. He was getting a fast car, he was an amazing driver, and this is not how it should be. He's meant to be here adoring his children, and he loved his family and they were so happy.

"They really did have the world at their feet, and it got ripped away from them and it's desperately unfair."

Race car drivers often say they accept the risks involved with their profession, and their loved ones understand that accidents sometimes happen with dire consequences. But constant safety improvements have dramatically reduced fatalities, and IndyCar had just three driver deaths since this league began in 1996.

The last fatality was Paul Dana, in 2006, during the warm-up session for the season opener at Homestead. Wheldon went on to win that race later the same day.

So, sure, the wives and girlfriends know bad things can happen when cars are on the track at very high speeds. But it's not something Susie Wheldon was dwelling on when her husband strapped into his car last October.

Dan Wheldon didn't have a full-time job last year; he refused to settle for a ride that didn't give him a chance to win and instead took the season off. He stayed home with his young family. Oliver was born last March, two months before Dan headed back to Indianapolis with Herta because he believed he could win in that car. And he did, inheriting the lead when rookie JR Hildebrand crashed coming out of the final turn.

"That is one of the things that I loved about Dan ? he believed in himself," his wife said. "He definitely rallied and got everybody around him on fire. It was a little team, it was their second start at Indy and probably not a lot of people thought they had a shot at winning that race."

From there, Dan Wheldon settled into a summer of testing IndyCar's new car during Dallara's development and working as a commentator for some of the race broadcasts. Things picked up as the season wound down, with Wheldon moving closer to completing a deal to return to Andretti Autosport in a full-time ride in 2012 as Danica Patrick's replacement.

Then he agreed to enter the $5 million challenge being offered by IndyCar to any outside driver who could come from the back of the field to win the season finale at Las Vegas. When no driver from any other series accepted the challenge, Wheldon was ruled eligible because he wasn't a full-time IndyCar driver.

He ran Kentucky two weeks earlier as a warm-up, then went into Las Vegas convinced he could win the race.

The entire weekend was festive ? on a whim, Dan and Susie got each other's initials tattooed on their wrists the night before the race. Never did anyone think the day would end in tragedy.

It happened quickly, a fiery 15-car accident just minutes after the start, and it was immediately apparent that Wheldon was seriously injured.

Susie Wheldon does not discuss the events of that day. And if she second-guesses his participation, she doesn't let on.

"No, not mad that he did that race. No," she said quietly.

But the reality is the race changed her life. She's now a 33-year-old widow, with two toddlers who will never know their father. His family is in England, her parents in North Carolina, and she's essentially alone trying to pick up the pieces and move forward.

This isn't the life she imagined ? "That's actually a phrase we've used, this isn't how it was supposed to be," said Emma Dixon ? and Wheldon has been angry about different things during her stages of grief, but not at Dan, at least not yet.

"Maybe that will come later, I don't know," she said. "We definitely shared something. It sounds silly to say because it sounds so cliche, but I know a lot of people don't experience that, what we had. I feel lucky (but) our four years of being married is like a second (in time). I get angry sometimes at that, that I wish we could have grown old together.

"I am thankful just for everything that we do have. Did have. Two beautiful children. We had an amazing life together and I know most people don't experience that in a lifetime. That's something that I hold on to."

Wheldon is also grateful for the support she's received from inside the racing community ? an auction started by Graham Rahal after the accident raised $627,203 ? and she's been touched by fans who sent her thoughtful notes about her husband. She read every one, replied with hand-written thank you letters and saved them all to one day show her sons.

"There's a lot of times, I think, that when people pass away everybody that's left sometimes can romanticize about the idea of what that person was or what they did," she said. "With Dan, he really was that amazing guy. It wasn't like you're kind of embellishing because everyone wants to say good things about someone when they're not here. He really was that guy.

"He was an incredible human being. He was obviously a fierce competitor, but he was an even better person. That's not an exaggeration."

Light pollution transforming insect communities

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? Street lighting is transforming communities of insects and other invertebrates, according to research by the University of Exeter.

Published in the journal Biology Letters, the study shows for the first time that the balance of different species living together is being radically altered as a result of light pollution in our towns and cities.

Believed to be increasing by six per cent a year globally, artificial lighting is already known to affect individual organisms, but this is the first time that its impact on whole communities has been investigated.

This study shows that groups of invertebrates living near to artificial lights include more predators and scavengers. This could be impacting on the survival rates of different species, having a knock-on effect on birds and mammals that rely on these species for food. The effects could be affecting entire ecosystems and even humans.

The research team based their study in the market town of Helston in West Cornwall. They placed pitfall traps directly under and between street lamps that were 35 meters apart for a number of days and nights. This allowed them to compare, not only results for day and night, but also differences between areas under and away from street lights.

They collected 1,194 individuals covering 60 species. They discovered that total numbers were more abundant under street lights, where they also found more predatory and scavenging species, such as ground beetles and harvestmen. This was the case during the day, as well as at night, suggesting that the effect on communities is ongoing.

Lead author Dr Tom Davies of the Environment and Sustainability Institute at the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus said: "Our study shows that light pollution could be having a dramatic effect on wildlife in our towns and cities. We need to be aware of how the increase in artificial lighting is impacting on the delicate ecosystems on which we all rely. Our research shows, for the first time, the changes that light pollution is making to entire communities of invertebrates. We now need to examine what impact this is having on other communities and how this may be affecting important ecosystem services and whether we should change the way we light urban spaces."

Securing enough funding for your Dallas schools is really a ghd difficulty skilled by quite a few school districts in the Usa. Most funding has turn into system specific, with authorities managing its use and generally benefiting only a portion from the Dallas schools college students. Condition funding continues to be scarce, demanding Dallas schools to depend on neighborhood house and college taxes to go over the common desires with the colleges. Furthermore, federal govt oversight produces a lot more administrative needs. This signifies that numerous with the valuable dollars the Dallas schools obtain through federal government funding should be spent on administrative expenses, instead of straight to advantage the college students.

Lately, the Texas legislature handed new legislation for tax and college finance reform. Lots of are touting the regulation as particularly good for Dallas colleges. The law consists of tax cuts to organizations, house tax cuts, powerful taxpayer protections, and college funding and accountability improvements.

Right here is how the new ghd australia laws impacts the Dallas schools.

School Property Tax Control. Formerly, the Dallas colleges, together with other schools in Texas, could increase the school house tax rate by 6 cents for every $100 of property every single calendar year ? devoid of voter approval. With the new legislation, any increase of the college residence tax price of a lot more than four cents must have nearby voter approval. Additionally, the maximum school house tax was $1.50 for each $100 of residence. The brand new legislation will decrease that optimum to $1.00 per $100 of home over the subsequent two years.

Far more Accountability and Transparency. The new legislation not only needs even more bureaucracy for your Dallas schools, but they?re needed to create it offered on the internet. The Dallas schools will now be needed to location thorough local school ghd straighener investing data on a net site for everyone to evaluation. This new level of heavy oversight gives ammunition to any person who wishes to get their name inside the paper through official complaint towards the legislators or even bogus court action. Some question whether or not this could lead to extra fees towards the Dallas schools to defend required expenditures that benefit Dallas colleges college students, either directly or indirectly.

Teacher Compensation. On the upside, the brand new laws includes a $2,000 instructor spend elevate, sorely needed by Dallas schools lecturers. A $250 million state teacher performance spend strategy can also be integrated inside the regulation, of which Dallas colleges will receive its portion. The performance program is usually to encourage training innovation and excellence.

Overall, the brand new legislation puts $1.7 billion bucks of new dollars into schools across the state, drastically ghd straighener escalating the state?s talk about of community school funding. Though this new legislation does take a load off the Dallas schools home taxpayers by offering additional condition funding for general college expenditures, it does lower the neighborhood bucks that don?t have the hefty price tag tag of red tape administration, as well as decreasing the Dallas colleges capability to raise cash locally.
