Dashlane 2.0 (for iPhone)

If you like auto-filling your way through the Internet, but also worry occasionally about hackers cracking your passwords, the latest version of Dashlane (for iPhone) hits the sweet spot between security and laziness. This relatively new app syncs with our Editors' Choice desktop password manager to let you quickly access securely stored passwords and other confidential bits of information, like credit card details or your social security number. All you need to remember is one master password to access everything.?

In terms of features and usability, Dashlane 2.0 goes well beyond the 800-pound gorilla of password managers, LastPass Premium for iPhone ($1/month, 3 stars). Both come with built-in browsers that support auto-filling, but Dashlane's is more intuitive and responsive. The latest version also lets you manage your account from within the app itself. As a result, we think you'll actually stick with it.

Flexible Pricing
Dashlane comes in free or premium flavors, but premium makes it more usable. Only premium accounts let you sync multiple devices and use the app's built-in browser. Fortunately Dashlane accepts two forms of payment: money?$4.99/month or $39.99/year?or loyalty-like points, which you can earn as you use the app or refer friends who then sign up. Premium costs 25,000 points, or the successful referral of one friend.

Getting Started
If you're new to Dashlane you can get up and running in about five minutes. Version 2.0 lets you manage your entire account through the app, whether it's adding logins, editing stored information, or generating strong passwords when you create a new Web account through your mobile browser.

Start by entering your most-frequented websites and login information, with each site getting its own entry. Entries can be grouped into folders and labeled appropriately. I stuck all my work-related web accounts in a "Work" folder and personal accounts in a "Personal" folder, but you can be more creative than me.

Dashlane 2.0 includes forms for storing confidential information, like your social security number, passport number, even credit card details. When you come across an online form while using Dashlane's built-in browser, the app auto-fills your stored information.

The best application of this feature is when you're doing an online checkout at an e-commerce site, like Amazon or wherever else you like to shop online. When Dashlane detects a form requiring credit card details, it extracts the information from its servers and auto-fills entries immediately. I can see the benefits of using Dashlane when shopping on a desktop or iPad, but it's less common to make online purchases through an iPhone browser.

Dashlane's Browser Mimics Safari
As I mentioned earlier, if you want Dashlane to auto-fill your login information, you have to use Dashlane's built-in browser. It's a spitting image of Safari and just as fast. I turned off my data connection and opened three websites in both Safari and Dashlane, and all three sites loaded in the same time in each browser. Dashlane's browser definitely beats LastPass's, which is a rather slow-running version of Safari.

One major feature missing in the app, that's available in the desktop, is the ability to use Dashlane to log into native apps. In LastPass's app you at least have the option to copy login credentials and paste them directly into a native app, like Facebook, but I didn't see this option in Dashlane. To work around this, you'd have to use Dashlane's browser to log in through Facebook.com.?

Security Sweet Spot
Dashlane 2.0 for iPhone (free) has found the sweet spot for the lazy and the security-conscious. This slick mobile complement to the Editors' Choice-winning desktop password manager of the same name securely saves all your login names and passwords and auto-completes Web forms when you use the built-in mobile browser. Dashlane for iPhone lacks killer features found in the Dashlane desktop application, such as integration with other browsers or auto-fill for native apps, but it's still very useful for its secure storage and auto-fill while using the built-in browser. Dashlane 2.0 is PC Magazine's Editors' Choice for password manager for the iPhone.

Different specialised educational programs will enable faculty students to remain competitive for these massive salaries however the pupil is not going to should incur further programs to become certified. A highschool counselor may level out the advantages of attending a technical faculty that makes a speciality of teaching faculty student?s computer programming, laptop assisted drafting or pc networking skills. Dos Santos tipped to win as Angola heads to polls

Angolans head to the polls Friday for the second elections since the end of their 27-year civil war, with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos expected to extend his grip on power despite a revitalised opposition.

Voting in Africa's second-largest oil producer begins at 7:00 am (0600 GMT), with polls set to close 11 hours later.

Friday was declared a national holiday for the 9.7 million registered voters to visit the more than 10,000 polling stations at schools across a country twice the size of France.

Initial results are expected within a day, with final returns some time next week.

Angolans will cast ballots for parliamentarians, with the leader of the winning party becoming president.

The ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, in power since independence from Portugal in 1975, took more than 80 percent of the vote in the last elections four years ago and is expected to win comfortably again.

For the main opposition Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita), which won only 10 percent of the vote last time around, the elections are a chance to prove that the former rebellion is still relevant to national politics.

Party leader Isaias Samakuva has already raised concerns about the authenticity of the voter roll, in a campaign that has centred on calls for greater democracy and transparency in government.

But earlier this year Unita splintered, with the charismatic Abel Chivukuvuku forming the Casa party in April, along with a top-level defector from the MPLA, smaller opposition groups and prominent members of civil society.

He has made inroads by actively courting the youth vote with promises of better jobs and housing, seeking to harness the frustrations of the youth in a country where more than half the population is under 18.

In the decade since Angola's war ended, the oil-powered economy become one of the fastest-growing in the world, showering the elite with fabulous riches while 55 percent of the population live in abject poverty, according to UN data.

Redux Partners With Samsung, Sony, And LG, Putting Its Video Discovery App On 40M Connected TVs

Redux_Logo_White-300x231Nearly one-third of connected TV users already watch online video through those devices, and daily usage rates have grown 10x in a very short period of time. But it's not as easy as just flipping on the TV and switching channels: Instead, connected TV viewers are usually forced to try to navigate a series of apps and channel menus to hunt for something to watch. To solve this, video discovery startup Redux has been making a big bet on connected TV over the past year or so, creating apps and user interfaces that are designed to make streaming video as seamless as watching regular broadcast or cable TV. Last year, Redux launched an app for Google TV, which made streaming video more of a TV-like viewing experience on devices with that OS. The app has been pretty popular so far, ranking as one of the top-downloaded apps on the Google TV marketplace. But customers still had to download it. Since then, it's been working to partner with some big-time consumer electronics manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, and LG, and as a result, it will have its apps and technology preloaded into a ton of their smart TVs.

Tagwhat?s Virtual Tour Guide Gets A Social ?Superslider?

tagwhat appTagwhat tries to connect online content to real-world locations, and it's taking that idea step further with a new feature that it calls the Superslider. Co-founder and CEO Dave Elchoness says that there's an enormous amount of content on the web that's related to location but not geotagged ? which means that you might completely miss the relevance of a neighborhood or building as you pass through. For example, if you're traveling to New York and you walk past Katz's Deli, you might miss out on the fact that it's the setting for the famous "I'll have what she's having" scene in When Harry Met Sally. In fact, I've been inside the deli several times without knowing that. (I did watch my friends eat a particularly disgusting meal there, so it wasn't a total loss.)

Washington Public Disclosure Commission continues to review library complaints

The Washington Public Disclosure Commission is continuing to review complaints brought during the Aug. 7 campaign to select a location for the downtown Renton library.

The commission is expected to rule on whether to proceed with a formal investigation in two to three weeks, said Lori Anderson, spokesperson for the commission.

Renton businessman Kal Lambert filed a complaint with the commission against Mayor Denis Law and named the Renton Reporter as a witness.

Lambert, who owns Lambert Patent Services LLC in Renton, filed his compliant with the PDC on Aug. 2.

In it, Lambert alleges Law ?acted inappropriately with respect to proscribed activities of an elected official? under state law.

Lambert claims Law acted with bias when he quoted the various costs of the downtown library sites ahead of the Aug. 7 election.

Lambert claims Law did this in an interview with Renton Reporter staff that appeared in the July 20 edition, where he is quoted as favoring one cost estimate over another, presumably to favor one site.

The commission is also expected to make a decision whether to formally investigate the complaints filed by several people against the King County Library System alleging improper use of taxpayer funds to advocate for a downtown library site.

The process for complaints is that a preliminary investigation is done to ask questions informally and gather information. If the information leads the commission to believe there is merit to the questions raised, then a formal investigation is launched.

During the formal investigation, people are interviewed under oath and documents can be subpoenaed. A staff report is written and only after that can formal charges be issued.

Skilled migrants risk depression in low-paid jobs

Skilled migrants who can't find jobs that use their education and qualifications are more likely to suffer mental health problems after three and a half years of arriving in Australia, according to a new study led by a researcher from The University of Western Australia.

"It seems many migrants will take any job when they first arrive - often including cleaning, waiting in restaurants, labouring, working in factories or driving taxis - even if they are university-educated or have other skills," Associate Professor Alison Reid said.

"This is due to the cost of migration and because it takes a while for migrants to get their qualifications recognised. However, skilled migrants can suffer mental health problems such as anxiety disorders if they are still in those first jobs after an extended period of time."

The study - conducted for the UWA-affiliated Western Australian Institute for Medical Research - used a migrant questionnaire at six months, 18 months and three and half years after arrival.

Results showed no significant difference in migrant mental health during the first two periods, but well-being declined if skilled migrants could not find work that suited their qualifications by three and a half years.

"Skilled migrants are selected to enter Australia on criteria such as age, language ability, qualifications and work experience because they are expected to fill gaps in the Australian labour force," Associate Professor Reid said.

"However this study shows there is a large under-use of skills among migrant workers up to three and a half years after they arrive in Australia.

"Australia's immigration program has focused since the mid-1990s on encouraging skilled migration. What is needed now are support programs such as employment training, mentoring and supervision if - after a year - skilled migrants can't get work in their field."

(AP Photo/Greg Lyuan, File)

(AP) ? John Lennon's killer was denied release from prison in his seventh appearance before a parole board, New York corrections officials said.

Mark David Chapman, 57, was denied parole by a three-member board after a hearing Wednesday, the state Department of Corrections said Thursday. The transcript of his latest hearing wasn't immediately released.

Chapman shot Lennon in December 1980 outside the Manhattan apartment building where the former Beatle lived. He was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. The musician, singer and songwriter was 40.

"Despite your positive efforts while incarcerated, your release at this time would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialize the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime," board member Sally Thompson wrote. Board members Joseph Crangle and Marc Coppola agreed.

"The panel notes your good conduct, program achievements, educational accomplishments, positive presentation, remorse, risk and needs assessment, letters of support, significant opposition to your release and all other statutory factors were considered," Thompson wrote. "However, parole shall not be granted for good conduct and program completions alone."

Chapman can try again for parole in two years.

He was transferred in May from the Attica Correctional Facility in western New York to the nearby Wende Correctional Facility. Both are maximum security. The prison system doesn't disclose why inmates are transferred.

At his previous hearing, he recalled that he had considered shooting Johnny Carson or Elizabeth Taylor instead, and said again that he chose Lennon because the ex-Beatle was more accessible, that his century-old Upper West Side apartment building by Central Park "wasn't quite as cloistered." Chapman fired five shots outside the Dakota apartment house on Dec. 8, 1980, hitting Lennon four times in front of his wife, Yoko Ono, and others.

The former security guard from Hawaii said that his motivation was instant notoriety but that he later realized he made a horrible decision for selfish reasons.

"I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody and instead of that I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies," Chapman told the board two years ago.

Ono, 79, had said two years ago that she was trying to be "practical" in asking that her husband's killer remain behind bars. She said Chapman might be a danger to her, other family members and perhaps even himself.

In a 1992 interview at Attica, Chapman told Barbara Walters that it was dark when he shot Lennon in the back with a .38-caliber revolver after he exited a limousine, headed up the walkway to his apartment building and looked at Chapman. "I heard this voice ? not an audible voice, an inaudible voice ? saying over and over, 'Do it, do it, do it,'" Chapman said. He explained, "I thought that by killing him I would acquire his fame."

He has been in protective custody with a good disciplinary record, according to corrections officials.

Barnes & Noble sees 'Fifty Shades' of green

Barnes & Noble says its fiscal first-quarter loss narrowed, lifted by sales of e-books and other digital content as well as sales of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series at its bookstores. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barnes & Noble's fiscal first quarter was a tale of modern and traditional. Tech-savvy readers snapped up its e-books and other digital content during the period, while traditionalists headed to its bookstores for the popular "Fifty Shades of Grey" series and other items.

The double dose of good news, coupled with cost-control efforts and lower expenses, helped the New York company's loss narrow while its revenue rose.

Weak sales of its Nook e-readers and an unchanged full-year outlook may have given investors pause. They sent its shares down nearly 4 percent.

Barnes & Noble Inc., the largest traditional U.S. bookseller, faces tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores as consumers increasingly move away from traditional books in favor of electronic books. These factors have pushed the chain to invest heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books, with digital content playing a key role in its success last quarter.

Barnes & Noble also had the added bonus of riding the buzz of "Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James, the publishing phenomenon that has drawn legions of readers into bookstores. The erotic novels occupy the top three spots on The New York Times' list of best-selling print and e-book fiction.

Executives at Barnes & Noble speaking during a conference call on Tuesday said that the company's bookstores also benefited from sales of games, educational toys and other children's products. Management said the disappearance of competitor Borders' bookstores also provided a lift, and traffic improved in its stores for the first time in years.

For the period ended July 28, Barnes & Noble lost $45.2 million, or 78 cents per share. That was less than the $56.6 million, or 99 cents per share, that it lost a year earlier. Barnes & Noble hasn't made a profit in a non-holiday quarter in three years.

The New York-based chain reduced its selling and administrative expenses in the quarter as well as its interest expense.

Revenue climbed 2 percent to $1.45 billion from $1.42 billion.

Revenue for the retail division ? which includes bookstores and its website businesses ? rose 2 percent. Revenue from bookstores open at least a year, a key gauge of the chain's health, increased 4.6 percent. This performance was buoyed by the "Fifty Shades" sales as well as the Borders liquidation.

CEO William Lynch said the results were also helped by mass merchants and other brick-and-mortar booksellers reducing the variety of books they carry as well as cutting shelf space for books.

Removing the sale of Nook products, revenue at bookstores open at least a year increased 7.6 percent.

Barnes & Noble has 689 bookstores in 50 states.

Revenue for its college bookstores open at least a year fell 2 percent, as the May-through-July period is when most students have off from classes and does not include the important back-to-school buying period.

The Nook unit ? which includes e-readers, digital content and accessories ? reported basically flat revenue at $192 million. Sales of digital content surged 46 percent. This content includes digital books, digital newsstand and the apps business.

Revenue from devices dropped partly because of lower prices. Chief Financial Officer Michael Huseby said Nook prices were about 23 percent lower than a year ago.

Earlier this month Barnes & Noble announced that it was cutting the price for its less-expensive model Nook tablet computer by $20, undercutting Amazon's Kindle Fire. The New York company said it was lowering the price for the 8-gigabyte model Nook tablet to $179 from the current $199. The Kindle Fire, with 6 gigabytes of memory, sells for $199. Barnes & Noble also announced a $50 reduction, to $199 from $249, for its 16-gigabyte Nook tablet.

Device sales were also hurt by Barnes & Noble's inability to get enough of its e-readers with the Glowlight feature to market to meet demand. The Glowlight emits low-level light to help with bedtime reading.

"Device unit growth and digital content growth would have been materially higher, if not for the production shortages," Lynch said.

Barnes & Noble also maintained its prediction for a mid-single-digit decline in fiscal 2013 revenue at bookstores open at least a year. Revenue from college bookstores open at least a year is still expected to be flat.

Shares of Barnes & Noble fell 48 cents, or 3.9 percent, to close at $11.87 Tuesday. For the year to date, the shares are off 18 percent and far below their 52-week high of $26.

Judge strikes down Nevada's 'none' voting option

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? In a high-stakes election that could help determine the presidency and control of the U.S. Senate, a judge has ruled Nevada's unique "none of the above" ballot option is unconstitutional and has to go.

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones ruled Wednesday that because the "none" option can never win, even if it gets the most votes, it essentially makes those votes not count.

The ruling came during oral arguments in Reno over a lawsuit filed in federal court in June and financed by the Republican National Committee. It sought an injunction to remove the state's unique voter option, which has appeared on every election ballot for statewide races ? including presidential and Senate contests ? since 1976.

Secretary of State Ross Miller said his office planned "an immediate and expedited appeal to protect the long-standing public interest of the 'none of these candidates' option."

Nevada is the only state to offer the quirky option. It was a way to combat voter apathy after the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon and give them a chance to register their disdain for their choices.

While the law says "none" can't win, it could have played spoiler in a close race.

"None" has never bested named candidates in a general election, though it has come out on top in a few primary contests. In the 1998 U.S. Senate race, however, Democrat Harry Reid won re-election by 428 votes over then-GOP Rep. John Ensign. More than 8,000 voters rejected both men and opted to vote for "none."

That's a scenario the option's challengers ? a mix of Republicans, Democrats and independents ? didn't want to see this year.

The contest between President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney promises to be close, as does the one between GOP U.S. Sen. Dean Heller and his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley.

Conventional thinking suggests voters who select "none" may be more likely to favor a challenger, such as Romney, if the option wasn't available.

In their lawsuit against the secretary of state, opponents argued that because "none" doesn't count in the tally to determine a victor, voters ? whether they opt for "none" or a candidate who breathes ? are disenfranchised.

Michael Morley, in his argument to boot the "none" option, argued that the Voting Rights Act and other laws are designed to ensure everyone's votes are counted.

Deputy Attorney General Kevin Benson, representing the secretary of state, argued the lawsuit should be dismissed. They said voters "always have the right to not vote" for listed candidates, and voting for "none" is essentially no different than skipping a particular race on a ballot altogether.

But the judge disagreed, and early in the hour-long hearing said he believed that a "none" vote was indeed a vote that should be counted toward election results, and not just to register a protest.

"I don't buy your arguments that it isn't a vote, because it is a vote," Jones said.

Benson and John Parris, who represented a Las Vegas voter who intervened to preserve his right to vote for 'none,' told the judge he could order 'none' votes to be counted instead of striking the entire option from the ballot, and for a time the judge's comments and questions seemed to indicate that's how he would rule.

Instead, the judge granted an injunction, ordering "none of these candidates" be removed from the ballot.

Jones said he would issue a written ruling detailing his legal reasons at a later date but before Sept. 7, when state elections officials ballots have to ready for printing.

Mariah Carey lobbies for Lenny Kravitz in "Idol" judge search

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Wonder what Mariah Carey thinks of the reports that Nicki Minaj will be joining her on the "American Idol" judges' panel next season? Look no further than her twitter account.

As headlines suggested that Minaj's "Idol" recruitment was a done deal, Carey - who signed on as a judge for the singing competition in July - offered her own candidate for the spot: Lenny Kravitz.

Carey took to Twitter Monday to post a picture of herself and "Let Love Rule" singer Kravitz with the plea, "@AmericanIdol What's going on? need the info!! What about this combo? : ) if we could ever get him to do it!"

Carey joined the series following the departure of judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. As TheWrap reported previously, Carey will rake in $17 million to judge the show - the same amount that Lopez was seeking before parting ways with the show. The $17 million payday will make Carey the highest-paid judge on a singing competition, an insider told TheWrap.

So far, Fox, which airs "Idol," has remained mum on the reports of Minaj joining "Idol," and it remains to be seen if Lenny Kravitz is gonna go Carey's way - a spokeswoman for Kravitz has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

Earlier this month, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers confirmed reports that he's in the running for a spot on the "Idol" judging panel.

"The rumors are true," Jonas said via Twitter. "I am being considered to be a judge on 'American Idol,' and it would be a dream come true if it happens."

Southwest light-rail bidding begins ? again | Finance & Commerce

Repair work began Monday on the Martin Olav Sabo Pedestrian Bridge in Minneapolis. The Metropolitan Council decided to seek new bids for a Southwest Light Rail Transit line engineering contract after URS Corp., the firm slated to get the contract, faced questions about its work on the Sabo Pedestrian Bbridge. (Staff photo: Bill Klotz)

Engineering proposals due by Oct. 2

After halting a previous bid process, the Metropolitan Council has released a pair of new requests for proposals?(RFPs) to begin engineering work on the Southwest Light Rail Transit line.

The RFPs were made public on Friday and bids are due by Oct. 2, according to the Met Council, which is leading planning efforts for the proposed 15-mile transit line between downtown Minneapolis and Eden Prairie.

Firms are expected to be chosen by the Met Council in December or January and the engineering work is scheduled to be finished by the second quarter of 2014.

Met Council leaders had hoped to have the engineering done by the end of 2013 to keep on schedule for the line to go into service by 2018.

Plans were thrown off course when a pair of suspension cables on the Martin Olav Sabo Pedestrian Bridge broke in February. The Sabo bridge was designed by San Francisco-based URS Corp., which was slated to receive a $94 million contract to do all of the engineering needed to ready the Southwest LRT for construction.

The $5 million Sabo Bridge, which crosses Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis, was closed again this week for additional repairs. Questions about liability remain unanswered, but there was enough uncertainty to start the process over from scratch, Met Council officials said.

To help alleviate safety concerns, the regional planning agency is also planning to hire a consultant to oversee and review engineering work. A request for proposals for that work is expected to go out this fall, with an award in spring 2013.

URS spokesman Ron Lowe declined on Monday to say whether the firm would respond to the Met Council?s new RFPs. The only other company to bid during the last round was Los Angeles-based AECOM. Officials at AECOM, which designed the Hiawatha LRT line, have said they remain interested in the project, but a spokesman could not immediately provide an update.

Although the engineering timeline on the Southwest LRT has been pushed back, later work can be sped up so that costs won?t necessarily increase, according to the Met Council. Every year of delay typically adds around $40 million to project costs and makes it more difficult to obtain federal funding, officials have claimed.

Project backers expect the federal government to pay for up to half the $1.2 billion project.

Unlike the previous RFP, the engineering bids being sought now are split into two parts and cover just 30 percent of the work needed to prepare the line for construction.

One of the contracts covers a seven-station, 6.5-mile stretch between Mitchell Road, in Eden Prairie, and 11th Avenue in Hopkins. The other contract covers a 10-station, 8.5-mile area between Hopkins and the Interchange, a new transit hub being built north of Target Field.

The work was split into two parts so that smaller firms could bid and because of the different issues that exist on either end of the line. Engineers will have to design a number of bridges on the east end of the line while the west end is more complicated because of existing freight operations.

Work to be completed during preliminary engineering includes study of roadway crossings, road and trail connections, park-and-ride facilities, utility needs and environmental issues. Station locations and the site of an operation and maintenance facility that could hold 35 light rail vehicles are also expected to be solidified.

The route also includes 11 bridges. A separate RFP for inspection work on three bridges on the route ? the Minnehaha Creek Bridge, the Louisiana Overpass Bridge and the Lake of the Isles Bridge ? also went out on Friday.

Bids for that work, which also includes routine inspections of bridges on the Central Corridor and Hiawatha LRT routes, are due by Sept. 12.

The Met Council has $47 million from the Counties Transit Improvement Board and the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority to begin engineering work on the Southwest LRT.

Met Council spokeswoman Meredith Salsbery said Monday that the budget for the two new RFPs would not be disclosed while the bid process remained opened. The previous RFP was worth $94 million.

More money will almost certainly be needed to finish the engineering, however. The Met Council is seeking a share of a $47.5 million state bonding fund created in the last legislative session to pay for additional engineering.

After the project is 30 percent engineered, the Met Council can ask the Federal Transit Administration for money needed to finish the final design.

The engineering work is just a part of the planning for the Southwest LRT line.

Work on a Transitional Station Area Action Plan is due to begin in mid-September and to finish within a year. The $624,000 study will look at what kind of infrastructure is needed to support residential and commercials development near the station areas, said Katie Walker, Hennepin County?s Southwest LRT Community Works project director.

Bids for a $25,000 housing inventory that will explore demographics along the proposed route are also being reviewed now, Walker said. A consultant is supposed to be chosen later this month or in early September, and work finished by the end of the year.

Your Monroeville Heating and Air Conditioning System and Ventilation

The vent system in your home is vital to the operation of your Monroeville?HVAC system. Without successful ventilation, your home won?t have the necessary clean air to keep you and your family healthy. So, what does proper ventilation require and how can you ensure your home has it? Here are some quick tips.

Install the Right Parts from the Start

Proper ventilation should result in even air pressure in your home to avoid problems with gas pilot lights. It should also be as energy efficient as possible and provide clean air through proper filtration and cleaning of the air that comes in.

Energy Loss

Another major ventilation issue to keep in mind is energy loss. Ventilation tends to remove heated or cooled air from your home, forcing your furnace or air conditioner to work harder to replace it. As a result, you pay more for energy and it?s never quite comfortable inside.

To avoid this problem, ask your contractor about how you can improve your system?s energy?efficiency.

Supplements to Ventilation

Proper ventilation should not only provide fresh air, but it should also ensure your home has clean air. The air outside may be fresher, but it can be filled with pollutants like pollen, dander and smoke. These should be removed if possible. To do this, you need a full sized air cleaning system that removes particles from the air down to 0.3 microns.

HEPA filters can do this, as will electronic air cleaners which can ionize and remove smoke and gas particles. Make sure you discuss filtration and cleaning with your Monroeville?HVAC?contractor when they visit your home. If you have any questions about your HVAC system or you need to schedule a service, give?Boehmer Heating & Cooling a call!

Discussion: Marketing Shelter Pets ? YesBiscuit!

August 20, 2012

Are there one or two aspects of marketing shelter pets that you consider to be the most important or should every small detail related to marketing be considered essential?

To my mind, if a member of the public can see it, it?s marketing.? By that I mean to include such things as the cage housing the pet, the information on the kennel card, and obviously the actual pet.? In addition, there are numerous aspects of online marketing including any photographs, write-ups and pleas regarding the pet.

Is there a minimum a shelter should do in order to market a pet?? For example, present a clean pet in a clean cage to visitors and post a quality photo of the pet online?? Are small details such as the selection of a name for the pet significant?? Should shelters be considering all aspects of marketing as equally important?? Where do strategies such as offsite adoptions and crossposting to multiple websites fit into the equation?

Health insurance plans provide women with free preventative care ...

August 15th, 2012 by Leave a reply ?

Bad press continues to plague Obamacare, although the reasons for this are unclear. The Act has also been confirmed to be constitutional by the Supreme Court. Millions of people will benefit. You would think all the excitement would have died down. Except that?s not the way politics works in our great country. Whoever has the most money, shouts the loudest and gets their opinions heard. This means the irrational beliefs now prevail. As an example of why we should all be enthusiastically embracing the reforms, the 1st August saw the next set of rules come into force.

At no cost, a comprehensive set of preventative medical services must now be made available to women. Yes, that?s right. Access to all these services is free. If people are diagnosed early and get the necessary treatment, it costs less and gives you a country full of healthy people. If people delay until there?s an emergency, the cost of treatment is always higher and the chances of a full recovery lower.

So all women who hold health insurance plans are now entitled to a range of tests for cervical and breast cancers, gestational diabetes, osteoporosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and intervention into situations of domestic violence. Since cancers are the most common causes of death among women, screening for signs at a precancerous stage allows prompt and effective treatment. Similarly, the earlier osteoporosis is detected, the more rapidly the loss of bone density can be halted by calcium supplements.

Until now, women have been deterred from seeking access to screening services because either the initial costs or the copayments have been unreasonably high. As a result, many women have delayed getting the right treatment and have paid the price in the loss of health or with their lives. Promoting wellness through access to preventative medicine is now written into all health insurance plans for women. Why has this change in the law not been greeted with shouts of joy? We suggest it?s because the doctors are unhappy and pay for hostile propaganda. If preventive medicine becomes standard, their long-term profits will be hit. As it is, they receive the most by encouraging you to fall seriously ill and justify hospital treatment.

ASUS Zenbook Prime faces teardown, affords a little expansion in an even smaller space

ASUS Zenbook Prime faces teardown, affords a little expansion in an even smaller space

We often assume that Ultrabooks scarcely have any room to budge on the inside, and that's usually true. An iFixit teardown of ASUS' Zenbook Prime has proven that there's always an exception to the rule. Looking at a UX32VD with the same base layout as the UX31 we reviewed, the repair outlet finds that the upgraded Zenbook has both embedded and removable RAM: provided owners are still willing to perform some surgery, they can upgrade past the 4GB of included memory on their own terms. The repair team is a bit dismayed that there's a 5,400RPM hard drive spinning near the mini SSD -- how very 2011 -- but notes that it's equally swappable by those who want something faster. Whatever you think of the fully pieced-together ASUS PC, it's apparent there's a reward for those willing to take it apart.

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK KICKS OFF ON SATURDAY WITH A ...

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK KICKS OFF ON SATURDAY WITH OVER 1500 EVENTS??

OVER 600,000 PEOPLE EXPECTED AT EVENTS NATIONWIDE??

NUMBER OF BUILT HERITAGE PROPERTIES TO OPEN FOR FIRST TIME

Tuesday 14th August: On Saturday, National Heritage Week will kick off and run for eight days until Sunday 26th August. Throughout the week, over 1500 events, the majority of which are FREE, will take place across Ireland. Over 600,000 people are expected to attend events, meaning a huge knock-on economic impact for towns and villages across the country.?

The message from the Heritage Council, coordinators of National Heritage Week, is to GET INVOLVED. To find out what is happening throughout the week, log on to www.heritageweek.ie, download the free iPhone / Android Heritage Week Event App or pick up a copy of the Event Guide in your local tourist information office.?

This year, the Heritage Council has sought to focus on Ireland?s Built Heritage. During the week, over 600 built heritage events will take place with many sites and houses being made accessible to the public for the first time. ?These include Brownhall in Donegal, Free Masons Hall in Dublin, Courtown House in Kilcock, Stradbally Hall House in Laois, Kilpeacon House in Limerick, Hamwood House and Gardens in Meath, and Bracklyn House in Westmeath.

Speaking ahead of the week, Isabell Smyth, Heritage Council Communications Manager commented, ?2012 is shaping up to be the biggest National Heritage Week to date with over 1500 events registered to take place nationwide. This year will be particularly unique in that a number of built heritage properties will open their doors to the public for the first time. Ireland?s built heritage supports over 35,000 jobs and contributes in the order of ?1.5 billion to the national economy. The value of our built heritage as an economic resource has for too long been misunderstood and underplayed.? This is particularly evident in the case of our tourism offering. . The range and quality of our built heritage environment is a powerful motivating factor for wider tourism and related visitor expenditure, with 1/5 of all out of state visitor expenditure closely attributable to our built heritage.???

The sheer diversity of events taking place during National Heritage Week is what makes it unique. Seven years ago just 500 events took place for National Heritage Week, this year the week has hit a record high.? We expect over 600,000 people to attend events across the country during the week and we hope that towns and villages across Ireland will experience a knock-on economic effect as people attend events?, added Ms. Smyth.??

For those with an interest in photography, the annual National Heritage Week Photo Competition is now also open for entries. Images do not have to be taken during National Heritage Week but must have been taken in 2012. This year?s theme is Built Heritage. Simply submit an image(s) that you think captures Ireland?s Built Heritage. Images can be the interior or exterior of your favourite building, monument or ruin (historic or contemporary), a feature that captures your imagination (a window, door, handle, stairway), an interesting streetscape, a group of buildings, or examples of where built heritage meets natural heritage. To enter, upload your pictures to the official Heritage Week Photo Competition Site: http://pix.ie/group/heritageweek . The closing date for entries is 31st August 2012.?

To find out more about National Heritage Week pick up one of the 50,000 copies of the National Heritage Week Event Guide which are now available free throughout the country in F?ilte Ireland Tourist Offices, Libraries, OPW Sites, Bus Eireann Stations, County Council Offices etc. Complete event listings are also available on the National Heritage Week website, www.heritageweek.ie or on the FREE iPhone / Android Heritage Week App. You can also follow us on Twitter @heritageweek or the Heritage Week Facebook page.
