Why US Pharmacies Are Honoring Discount Prescription Cards and Paying Referral Fees

The discount rx services industry is becoming more and more popular throughout the United States. Word is slowly but surely spreading from community to community and medical office to medical office.

We're talking about major national retail chain store pharmacies traded on wall street as well as thousands upon thousands (over 57,000 participating pharmacies) of regional and local pharmacies all across the U.S. (even in small town America) are accepting and honoring discount prescription cards provided by discount rx services oriented companies.

Pharmacies have realized that they can gain new loyal customers by accepting and honoring discount prescription cards that give a discount on prescription medications. The pharmacies only give a discount on the medicine when someone presents the discount prescription card. They now have a potential new loyal customer in their store and they didn't spend a dime in advertising costs to acquire that new customer.

Instead of paying advertising costs (which are really expensive) the pharmacies have determined that it's much more cost effective to give a nice discount on the medicine and pay a small referral fee to the provider of the discount card.

Contrary to popular belief pharmacies make the bulk of their profits off of everything else they sell in the store and not on the medicine sales. They make a little bit of profit on the medicine sales but through careful study they have determined that they can give a decent discount on the medicine they sell in order to attract many more loyal repeat customers that will buy other items once they are in the store.

Every medication carries its own unique discounted rate. Some medications will be as high as 75% to 80% off and some as low as 5% to no savings at all. It really just depends on the medication being filled and the pharmacy at which it's filled. Medication prices will vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. Stores are careful not to lose money attracting customers with discount prescription cards.

The latest numbers now show that over 51 million people out of the 300 million in the United States have no prescription medication benefit and or an inadequate prescription medication benefit. This is due to harsh economic times, record unemployment, federal government policies and ever increasing inflation.

U.S pharmacies sales have dropped and one of the ways they have found to bolster sales has been to accept discount prescription cards. Doing so puts them in a favorable light with consumers, attracts new customers and has been proven to increase sales on non medicine items all throughout their stores.
