According to federal health officials, childhood obesity rates were the highest between 1999 and 2006. They make it sound as if the issue is getting better now but that doesn?t seem to be the case.

In another news story, The New York Times reported that ?32 percent of young people aged 2 through 19 were still judged overweight or obese as measured by body mass index, with roughly half falling into each of those categories. Their excess weight increases their risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.?

If parents don?t want their children to suffer from such ailments, they need to make a change now. Parents cannot depend on schools or the government to make their children healthy. They have to do it. If they don?t, the consequences will be severe.

Starting now, make a commitment to teach your children about healthy nutrition and fitness. If they can learn these lessons young, they are likely to stick with them the rest of their lives. Make sure they are eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed snacks. Kids should also learn to drink more water and less sugary drinks.

Kids? exercise is also necessary for keeping your kids healthy. Children need 30 minutes of exercise every day to stay healthy. Set aside some family time to do fun activities together such as riding bikes in your neighborhood or taking a hike. There are also a ton of great kids? indoor exercises they can do.

Parents, it is time for you to take responsibility for the health of your child. Obesity carries with it a lot of baggage and heartache. The best thing you can do for your child is to make sure they don?t carry that baggage with them their entire lives.
