Malay, Chinese toon houses pact

BEIJING -- Malaysian toon studio Animasia has signed a $5.2 million co-production deal with ZN Animation, one of China's largest animation producers, to make a 52-part animated skein, "My Brother Is Monkey King." The 2D high-definition series will be conceived by Animasia, then developed and designed by both ZN Animation and Animasia. The skeins, each 11 minutes long, are inspired by the Chinese legend "Journey to the West," but set nowadays in a school, focusing on a brother and sister with extraordinary powers. ZN Animation is one of China's biggest toon shingles, with heavy exposure on pubcaster CCTV, while Animasia is one of Malaysia's chief studios. "Malaysia, with approximately 30% Chinese population, is no doubt an ideal partner for future co-productions," said Adam Ham, executive director of the Malaysian promotion group Global Creative And Media Agency.
