Google's Rubin Confirms 900,000 Android Activations Per Day

Google's mobile chief said Monday that its partners are now activating 900,000 Android devices each day.

Andy Rubin, Google's senior vice president of mobile, announced the milestone via a tweet in which he also denied plans to leave the search giant.

"No plans to leave Google. Oh, and just for meme completeness ? there are over 900,000 android devices activated each day," Rubin wrote.

Rumors about Rubin departing Google got started when blogger Robert Scoble said via a Google+ update that Rubin was leaving the search giant to head up a startup named CloudCar.

"If you look at the management team that startup has a sizeable list of Silicon Valley stars building up on its team," Scoble said of CloudCar. "I thought I'd write this in public as a form of journalism. If it's not true, it's easy for someone like +Larry Page or +Vic Gundotra to signal such in the comments here, not to mention Andy himself."

Rubin did indeed respond via Twitter and a Google+ post of his own.

"How a rumor gets factualized: Cloudcar are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos," Rubin wrote. "Revel Touch (Mar Hershenson's company: www.reveltouch.com) is another cool company that shares this space. I'm not joining either one and I don't have any plans to leave Google. See you on the 27th!"

June 27 is the first day of Google I/O, the search giant's annual developer conference, where we are sure to hear more about what's on tap for Android in the next year.

Back in February, just prior to Mobile World Congress, Rubin confirmed that Android activations were at 850,000 per day. Things have been moving at a rather fast clip for the Google-owned mobile OS. In December, activations were at 700,000 - Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone, there were 3.7 million Android activations, which helped contribute to the 1.2 billion iOS and Android apps that were downloaded between Dec. 25 and Dec. 31.

Back in November, Google announced at its music event that there were 550,000 Android activations each day. In June, that number was at 500,000, up from 350,000 in April.

A recent report from IDC found that Google's Android will likely maintain its smartphone OS dominance in the next five years, though its share will peak in 2012.
